Lt. Col. (USAF Ret.) Dutton Gordon Stoy passed away Thursday, October 17th, 2013. He was born April 23, 1931 in the District of Columbia. He grew up in Clarksburg, West Virginia and graduated from Washington Irving High School in 1949. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1954. Upon graduating he served in the United States Air Force for 22 years. While serving in the Air Force, he obtained his Masters Degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. During his years of his active duty service, he flew in 77 combat missions and 23 non-combat missions during the Vietnam War. After retiring, he taught Math for 10 years at Washington Irving Middle School in Springfield, VA. In 1986, he and his beloved wife moved to Chapel Hill. He became a member of North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department where he served for 10 years. He loved volunteering and accumulated over 2500 volunteer hours at the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill. During his years at the Ronald McDonald House, he and his wife were awarded the "North Carolina Award" for outstanding volunteer services.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Patricia Ann Stoy; his daughters: Sharon Patricia Stoy, deceased; Debra Lynn Bernard of Red Lodge, Montana; Kathee Lee Dishner of Pinehurst, North Carolina; Brenda Marie Hilgartner of Round Hill, Virginia and three son-in-laws, William D. Bernard, Jess Dishner and Bruce Hilgartner. Blessed with 7 grandchildren: Brandee Alison James, Michael Dutton Bernard, Natasha Marie Mayfield, Eric Thurman Hilgartner, Kristen Marie Bernard, Brittney Caylor Arce, Oliver Gordon Phelps Hilgartner and their spouses and a great grandson, Keegan Luis Arce of Davidson, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill.
There will be a Memorial Service at the church he attended, Orange Chapel United Methodist Church on Saturday, November the 23rd, 2013 at 5pm. The church is located on 1634 Orange Chapel Clover Garden Road, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27516. 919-968-4102. Dutton's Funeral will be at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Honors on a later date. Please contact the family if you plan to attend.
