Barbara Michos Obituary

Barbara J. Michos
March 23, 1930 - June 5, 2011
Raleigh
Barbara Jobe Michos, 81, died suddenly on Sunday evening June 5, 2011 surrounded by family and friends.
She was born Barbara Ann Jobe on March 23, 1930 to L. H. and Lizzie White Jobe, both deceased. She attended N. B. Broughton High School in Raleigh and graduated from Woman's College (UNCG) in Greensboro, NC in 1952 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. She worked as a graphic artist in the Department of Public Instruction until her retirement in 1994.
Barbara married James Michos on May 11, 1957. She was widowed in 1970 and never remarried. Her only child, Melissa Ann Michos of Greensboro, NC, and Barbara's sister, Mary Elizabeth Jobe Hilbourn, WA, survive her.
Barbara joined the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh in 1973 and was an active member for almost 40 years taking pride that her parents were two of UUFR's founding members in 1949. Barbara served as President of the Fellowship from 1976 to 1977, later serving as Fellowship Treasurer, and worked tirelessly for years as a member of the Aesthetics, Memorial, Finance and Ways and Means Committees. She spent almost every Tuesday morning at UUFR, counting and depositing the Sunday collection, wrote the "About the House" column for the Chalice newsletter and was one of the most knowledgeable unofficial keepers of UURF's history. UUFR was in a very real sense an integral part of Barbara's life and who she was.
Barbara was active in the Wake County League of Women Voters, Democratic Women of Wake County and Wake County Senior Democrats. She also held memberships in the Alumni Association and Minerva Society at UNCG.
A fabulous cook, Barbara enjoyed entertaining and preparing elaborate meals for family and friends. Her culinary skills were vast and knowledgeable. Barbara was a generous, kind, and gracious woman who lived her life to the fullest and in her own way until the end. Many will miss her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the UUFR Memorial Fund, 3313 Wade Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27607 or UNCG Advancement Services, Gregory Ivey Art Dept. Fund, PO Box 26170, Greensboro, NC 27402.
A memorial service will take place June 19, at 3:00 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, 3313 Wade Avenue. Her family will receive guests at a reception following the service.

Barbara's sudden passing was such a surprise to the many people who knew and loved her. I was fortunate to have two opportunities to do so. I was first introduced to Barbara by her daughter, Melissa, who was to become one of my closest lifelong friends. Following college I went to work in the Media and Technology section at the NC Department of Public Instruction where Barbara ruled the roost in the graphics unit. It was there that she became my friend as well. I learned from her at work, heard all the "latest" she was up to at the UUFR, ate many delicious meals at her home and with her in resturants around town, shared much laughter, and watched with admiration her devoted care of her aging parents through their final years. Barbara was a kind, unique and lovely person and I will miss her.

Barbara was and will continue to be a presence at UUFR. She will be sorely missed not only for the person she was but for the love and caring she brought to the fellowship. She kept me on my toes and I always appreciated it. I personally will miss her and her advice,

I always loved to talk to Barbara. She always made me feel welcome when I was a member at UUFR. After I moved to Chapel Hill, she still kept me informed of the comings/goings as I was still getting the newsletter and always read her "about the house" column. She will be sorely missed.

Barbara was an important part of UUFR for all the almost 35 years I've been a member. I spoke to her there 2 weeks before she died and she looked great and was gracious as always. I can't think of anyone who's given so much time to UUFR or cared so deeply about it for so long. It's hard to imagine we won't see her there again.

I had the honor of interviewing Barbara for a UU research paper that I was writing for when I was going to Wake Tech. She graciously agreed. I got to get to know her better and she truly was a dedicated UUer. Also she was a truly genuine person. It will be so strange to look over to the right second row back and not see her sitting there..She will be truly missed.

Barbara was the welcoming presence I always looked for at UUFR. In fact, I made it a point to sit in front of her, just to make sure I had a chance to speak to her on Sundays. Barbara's love of people shone through. I will miss her.

Barbara Michos was one of the first people I met at UUFR. Her friendly enthusiasm was heartwarming, as was her dedication to UUFR and to making a difference in this world. She will be sorely, sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

It will be hard to think of UUFR without Barbara. She was such a role model and mentor for so many people, including myself. Barbara was also very active in her neighborhood. She was generous beyond words.

Sweet Barbara. Such dignity and class. Always aware and caring about what was going on. She touched me in many small ways and I wished to be like her sometimes. Her spirit will remain within the walls of our fellowship for all time. In Peace, Kelly Rosinski

Barbara was always someone I wanted to be like. Such dignity, class and deep caring for people and causes. UUFR will not be the same without her. But I trust her spirit will stay within the walls of our fellowship for all time. In Peace, Kelly Rosinski

I met Barbara at Democratic Women and as we got to know each other she encouraged me to visit the Fellowship. I visited for several years before I joined last year. I often sat with her at the service and enjoyed many lunches with her too. She was a dear friend and a genuine good person. I will miss her.

The UUFR has lost a great pillar of wisdom, dignity, and inspiration. I often looked to Barbara as someone I wanted to be like. Such class, and always with a caring attitude. She is already missed by me. Thankful to have known her. In peace, Kelly Rosinski

Barbara Jobe Michos was an anchor to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh as the daughter of two of its founding members. She was also an intensely kind and giving human being to everyone including my late wife Anna in the last years of her life. I relied on Barbara's experience and wisdom, and in memory will continue to do so.
