Harry Edward Groves
Harry Edward Groves was born September 4, 1921 in Manitou Springs, CO. He was the son of Dorothy Cave Groves and Harry A. Groves. Harry lost his wife of 61 years, Evelyn, on August 24, 2011, two years to the day prior to his own death.
Professor Groves graduated cum laude in 1943 from the University of Colorado. He received his J.D. from the University of Chicago in 1949 and an LL.M from Harvard University in 1959. He was a member of the bars of NC, TX and OH.
During the Korean War he was a 2nd LT with the Judge Advocate General's Corps in the 82nd Airborne Division.
Professor Groves was the President of Central State University in Ohio. He was dean of three law schools, Texas Southern University, the University of Singapore and North Carolina Central University. He was the visiting professor at numerous law schools and completed his law teaching career as the Henry L. Brandis Professor of Law of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received numerous honors and awards throughout his career and authored five books on the constitution of Malaysia.
He is survived by one son Sheridon Groves; three grandchildren Jason Groves, Tiffany Jana, and Dolores Joy; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service and visitation will be held September 4, 2013 from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Carolina Meadows Auditorium on the Carolina Meadows Campus at 100 Maple Lane, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.
