I had heard of Joey through my daughter, Shelley, who had known Joey since cotillion days in Cary. I was at a basketball game at Cardinal Gibbons watching my daughter cheer and the team play. At the end of the game the coach put Joey in and almost immediately he scored a 3-pointer. The crowd erupted in cheers; it was then that I realized how very much Joey was liked and admired by his classmates. May your memories of him sustain you through the difficult times and know that the thoughts and prayers of his many friends are with you.

I loved Joe like a brother, all the time we spent together brought us closer to the point where we called each other brother. I even thought of myself as one of the family members, even calling Joe's grandmother grandma. I am here if you guys need me for anything, just let me know.

Dear Elana, Harry and Family,
It was just a few days ago I received an e-mail from a mutual friend asking for prayers for an old school mates son who was gravely ill. I responded, not knowing exactly who this was and hoped for a miracle and that my prayers would be answered. The next morning, I received the sad news and also an explanation of who this young man's parents were. I was deeply saddened to learn that this was your son and by the tragic turn of events.
Elana, what a beautiful son, and such wonderful man that was so loved and cherished by everyone that knew him! How lucky for all of you to have had Joe in your lives.
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all during this most difficult time.
With my sincere condolences and much love,

Dear Kristy & O'Connell family, we had the pleasure of knowing Joe through Steph and Bob. He was a wonderful, giving man - I will never forget the delicious spagetthi sauce he made for all of us when we went skiing together or how he could keep you laughing for hours. The world has lost a truly wonderful person. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. Love Amanda & Bradley

My daughter Hannah worked for Joe this past summer at Roly Poly. She so enjoyed working for him and always had so many entertaining stories to tell about him. His kindness and sense of humor was very evident in the way that he conducted his business and his life. We are so sorry for your loss. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

To the O'Connell family,

I am so very sorry for your loss. Although I only met Joe two or three times, I found him to be a delightful and funny young man. My daughter Stephanie Swanson always shared stories about Joe and his humorous, generous ways with me. I love hearing them. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

My wife knew Joe (Joey) since his high school baseball days and was thrilled to find out we lived just a few doors away when we relocated to Cary from SC. I just met Joe when we moved to the neighborhood a few years ago but thoroughly enjoyed sharing a laugh and a smile every time we were together. What a neat guy, he will be missed greatly by all that knew and loved him. Soar high with your Eagles Joe!

Dear O'Connell Family,

We remember all the good times we had just knowing Joey while we lived in Cary. He was always so happy and such fun to be around. He was an awesome athlete despite his illness. He was a true friend to all. He will be missed but I know he will live through his new baby girl. Love to all
