Marci Kramish Campbell passed away on December 14, after living with cancer, with grace and caring, for almost two years.
In addition to being Professor of Nutrition at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, she was a devoted mother, an accomplished folk musician, and an inspiration to all for her caring, positive approach to life.
Marci was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 12, 1952. She grew up and attended high school in suburban Washington, D.C. before attending Duke University. After graduating from Duke in 1974, she met and married her husband, Tom Campbell, and gained a PhD in Public Health Nutrition from UNC-Chapel Hill. She taught and conducted research at UNC from 1993 until her death.
Marci was a member of UNC's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and program leader for cancer prevention and control at the Center, and she was a member of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. She was also the co-director of the LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence at the Lineberger Cancer Center. Throughout her career, she was committed to reducing risks for cancer, especially among low-income and minority populations. She was known for her work in developing innovative, research-tested interventions for an impressive number of health risks and conditions. Dr. Campbell worked with a variety of organizations, including churches, community groups and voluntary health organizations. She had collaborators around the world. Her work focused particularly on nutrition behavior change for improving health and preventing diseases.
She believed passionately in the power of the community, the importance of resolving health disparities, and the mentoring of students and fellows. She left an indelible mark on the lives of the students and colleagues who knew her that will influence their own lives and research in years to come.
She is survived by her parents, Arvin and Shirley Kramish of Chapel Hill; her husband, Tom Campbell of Durham; three children, Ewan Campbell and Amy Campbell of Durham, and Lee Campbell of Seattle, Washington; and a two month old granddaughter, Lucille Campbell of Seattle, whom she met for the first time the night before she passed away.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 20 at 3:00 p.m. at the Eno River Unitarian Fellowship 4907 Garrett Road in Durham. A reception will follow the service. Marci will be buried privately in Durham's Maplewood Cemetery.
