Charles Baker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 14, 2011.
Charles Wiley "Chuck" Baker
February 29, 1932 - November 12, 2011
Raleigh
Charles Wiley "Chuck" Baker died peacefully among family at the age of 79 after a hard-fought, five-year battle with colon cancer on November 12, 2011.
Chuck was a poignant example of how one life well lived can touch so many others. In his final days, a steady stream of colleagues, friends and loved ones took time to share how in his quiet and humble way Chuck had influenced their lives for the better.
Born in Harnett County, NC, on February 29, 1932 to Freddie William Baker and Eva Wood Baker, Chuck was the oldest of nine children. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother Edward, who died in infancy. Growing up on his family's farm, Chuck learned at an early age the value of hard work, honesty and generosity.
A born salesman, as a young boy Chuck began honing his skills selling packets of vegetable and flower seeds to neighbors. He was educated in the Harnett County Schools and graduated Lafayette High School. Chuck worked at Belk Stores during high school and his two years at Campbell College before serving four years in the United States Air Force. Upon discharge, Chuck attended Wake Forest College in Winston-Salem, graduating in 1956. He was employed by NCR Corporation/AT&T for 27 years. Retirement, however, was not in Chuck's vocabulary, as he immediately embarked on a second career in real estate sales with Howard Perry & Walston for nearly 20 years.
Chuck considered his greatest successes to be his 53-year marriage to wife Patricia, their three children, teaching life lessons to Boy Scouts as Scoutmaster of Troop 334, and mentoring young professionals through work. He was a member of the West Raleigh Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. Chuck brought an air of whimsy to the workplace by founding a beloved 9-year tradition known as "Mater Sandwich Day" at Howard Perry & Walston. A man known for his unwavering faith, Chuck was a devoted member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, where he enjoyed many years serving as a member of the Vestry and as a Lay Reader.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Patricia Huff Baker, and their three children: Charlie Baker and wife, Gayle, of Charlotte, NC; Mark Baker and wife, Nancy, of Purcellville, VA; and Anne Baker Altizer and husband, Steve, of Alexandria, VA; along with seven grandchildren: Grace Baker, Davis Baker, Kelsey Baker, Benjamin Baker, Hayes Baker, Browning Altizer, and Drew Altizer. Surviving members of Chuck's family include: brothers Colon Baker (Jean) of Coldwater, MS, Preston Baker (Phyllis) of Fuquay-Varina, Pearce Baker (Betty) of Dunn; sisters Shirley Talton (Dick) of Fuquay-Varina, Carolyn Burns (TC) of Fuquay-Varina, Linda Hawk (Jim) of Rowlett, TX, Glenda Dowd of Garner and Joyce Baker of Fuquay-Varina, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Chuck's life will be held at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 4523 Six Forks Road, in Raleigh on Wednesday, November 16th at 11:00 am. Chuck will be interred at Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens in Fuquay-Varina at 2:30 pm.
The family would like to express deep gratitude to the dedicated nurses and staff at Rex Cancer Center and Hospice of Wake County, especially Drs. Jeffrey Crane and Kenneth Zeitler. Their loving and attentive care allowed Chuck to be among his loved ones and maintain his dignity and indomitable spirit until the end. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the new NC Cancer Hospital at Rex, 2500 Blue Ridge Rd., Raleigh 27607 or Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh 27607. www.Brown WynneMillbrook.com

Dear Pat and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Chuck had such an impact on so many people, and will be missed by all of us. In my work, I meet so many wonderful people, but he will always have a special place in my heart. If I am ever dealing with a significent illness, I only hope I can do it with half the grace that Chuck demonstrated throughout his. Although I only knew him for 5 years, I feel like I've known him all my life. It was such an honor to hear Charlie and Mark's eulogies...what a blessing his family was to him. He loved all of you so much, and would always tell me stories of the kids and grandkids. We are all better for having known him. A life well lived, indeed.
Pat, I hope to see you before too many weeks go by. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers at Rex.
God Bless, Nancy

I had the privilege of working with Chuck way back when he first got into Real Estate with HP&W. He always had a warm and friendly greeting and treated everyone with respect and kindness. A fine man has left a fine legacy.

November 14, 2011

It has been my good fortune and pleasure to have known Chuck Baker through the Rotary Club of West Raleigh. When I moved back to Raleigh in January 1995 and joined the West Raleigh Club shortly thereafter I first met Chuck. He was a very good and active Rotarian and a fine gentleman, just the kind of individual we like to have as friends. His work in the club and especially the Humanitarian Award Committee showed Chuck's attitude of Rotary's "Service Above Self" motto. We will miss him. I regret that I will not be able to pay my respects attending the Celebration of Life Service Wednesday; I have an appointment at UNC Hospital at that time. A Rotary Friend, James E. "Jim" Stewart

Chuck is a man that I have known since 1965. He has always tried to guide me and give me advice. As I have grown older and returned to the house next door, Chuck would see me in the yard and say, "I always pull those weeds when I see them in my yard." He would point and make sure that I knew which they were so I would always pull them. I love both of them beyond words and I will always remember as will my daughter. Chuck could never have been the man without his wonderful wife, Patricia. They made the perfect couple. Never saw that when I was 12 but, I have through the years. Both Chuck and Pat have always given my daughter encouragement and always told her how proud they were of her. These are the neighbors that you always dream of. They are once in a lifetime. I love them both. I know Chuck has gone on to a place of no suffering and I am happy for him. I hope to see him again one day. Charlie, Anne and Mark, I want to also want to say that you also had a part in making this man the person he was. So understanding and dearly loved.

Knowing Chuck has been an honor to me. It isn't often that you find a genuinely "Good Guy" and Chuck Baker is without a doubt one of the best. I don't think that I will ever have a 'Mater Sandwich again that I don't think about Chuck and I know that I will have a smile because of him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, but I also that his is a life worth celebrating!

I first met Chuck in May of 2007 when I went to work at the Falls office of Coldwell Banker Howard Perry And Walston. But from my very first day I can honestly say Chuck was one of the kindest and most gentile and helpful people I have ever met. He always had a smile for everyone and he never said an unkind word about anyone either. He loved coming to the Falls office and being with his Falls Family as much as we loved seeing him. Even after having surgery and going through his various cancer treatments he was the one bringing joy and hope and friendship every time he walked throught the door.

I was fortunate enough to spend the better part of 90 minutes with Chuck and Pat this past Wednesday just talking about his life: how he met Pat, his career before real estate and of course his love for Pat, his kids and grandkids. He was so proud of all of them and so thankful he had Pat by his side.

I will always remember that the final time I left his room he had a smile on his face and he wished me well. He knew what lay ahead and he was prepared. His faith in Christ gave him peace about the future and the love of his family and friends gave him strength to the very end.

He will truly be missed.
