William Alexander Graham, III, J.D., "Bill", died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at the age of 69.
Born on January 11,1943 in Durham, N.C., to Dr. William A. Graham and Mrs. Ermine Peek Graham, Bill attended Calvert Method School (subsequently Durham Academy), The Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (B.A. in Economics and Juris Doctor from the School of Law), and Duke University (M.A. in Forestry.) Bill practiced law in Hillsborough, Durham, and Sparta, N.C., both in private practice and public service. He also taught Business Law at North Carolina State University in Raleigh as an adjunct professor.
Bill enjoyed the outdoors, camps Sequoyah and Tsali in Weaverville, N.C., dancing, putting the shot as a varsity letterman at Carolina, photography, golf, the Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain, real butter, drives on The Blue Ridge Parkway, sharpshooting, and whistling along to the songs of Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, and John Denver. He served on the Selective Service Board, was a Member of The Society of the Cincinnati, and administered the Cameron Scholarships at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
He is survived by his brother, Mr. Thomas DeGraffenried Graham; his wife, Mrs. Karen Lowrance; and four children, Dr. William A. Graham, IV, Mrs. Cameron Graham Vivanco, Ms. Brittany Elizabeth Graham, and Mr. Brian Scott Graham; two nieces and two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at Christ Episcopal Church in Sparta, N.C., at two o'clock in the afternoon and a graveside service will be held Thursday, January 19th, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Hillsborough, N.C. time to be determined.
Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, NC is assisting the Graham family.
