Rose Martin Wright

April 1, 1936 – July 14, 2014

Durham

Rose Martin Wright peacefully passed away on July 14, 2014 at the age of 78 in Durham, North Carolina after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. Rose was born in Opelousas, Louisiana to Octavia Martin Williams (Abraham Williams) and Arthur Martin.  She resided in Durham for 40 years and was a proud graduate of North Carolina Central University. Rose enjoyed 21 years of employment at Wells Fargo Bank, retiring as a Personal Banker.

A woman of prayer, Rose was one of the founding members of The Ignatian Companions of North Carolina. Recognizing the significance of spiritual direction and wanting to learn more about how to help people with their prayer, Rose recently completed a 2 year program to become a certified Spiritual Director.

At Holy Cross, Rose directed individuals in the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola, provided spiritual direction, and because she herself was a prayerful person supported many people in times of crisis, pain, or struggle.

Rose also shared her faith. She was one of the first to guide and instruct in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. For many years she served as the Director of the process and in doing so, touched the lives of countless new Catholics and their families. Rose was also a Master Catechist and completed the Raleigh Diocesan Lay Leadership program.

Rose was the beloved wife of Frank for 56 years and the incredibly adoring mother of Laurette, Carla, Terence (Diane) and Jennifer (Frank). She was blessed and loved by her 3 grandchildren, Cameron Jukes, Sterling Jukes and Fredrick Wright Boone. Rose is also survived by her sisters Dorothy Martin Goodman (Peter) and Mary Jane Jones (Lawrence).

Visitation will be held on Monday July 21, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to celebrate Rose's homecoming immediately following at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2438 S. Alston Avenue, Durham. Services will be led by The Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Ph.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Holy Cross Catholic Church or Duke Hospice. Please note in the comments that the donation is: In Memory of Rose Wright. Arrangements have been made under the direction of Fisher Funeral Parlor, Durham.

The family wishes to thank all who supported Rose during her final days.
