Simon Carlyle Sitterson, Jr., 97, died on Friday, August 22, 2014 at Magnolia Cottage Care. Mr. Sitterson was born in Kinston, NC on March 30th, 1917, the son of the late Simon Carlyle and Gladys Mitchell Sitterson. After graduating from Grainger High School, Simon attended The Darlington School in Rome, Georgia. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from The University of North Carolina in 1939 where he was also a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. Mr. Sitterson began his accounting career in Grand Rapids, Michigan with Seidman and Seidman. He enlisted and served as an officer of a bomb disposal unit in the U.S. Navy during World War II, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade. His four year tour of duty was mainly in the Pacific theater and included the invasion and capture of Okinawa. Initially based in Washington, D.C. Simon met Frances Elizabeth Chivers who was then an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. After a two year courtship, they were married April 6, 1946. The couple lived for a short time in Raleigh, NC before deciding that Kinston was home and would always be home. In 1946, Simon opened his CPA firm: Simon C. Sitterson, Jr. CPA. A devoted Kinstonian, Mr. Sitterson ran for and was elected to the Kinston City Council in 1959. While serving as Mayor Pro Tem, he was called on to complete the term of then Mayor Guy Elliott. He then served 18 consecutive years as Kinston's Mayor. During his tenure, he served as President of the N.C. League of Municipalities, President of Electri Cities of N.C., President of Neuse River Council of Governments, President of EPIC, Chairman of Eastern N.C. Municipal Power Agency #3, Board of Directors of the American Public Power Association, Governor's Crime Commission and Criminal Justice Training Academy. He was also a proud member of American Legion Post 43 and a lifelong member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church where he served three terms on the Vestry. In 1968, he was selected by the Kinston Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year. In 1989, he received the NC Association of CPA's Public Service Award as well as the American Institute of CPA's Public Service Award. In 2012, he received the state's highest honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Mr. Sitterson was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Frances Chivers Sitterson, his son Dr. Norman Chivers Sitterson, his grandson Simon Carlyle Sitterson IV, his brother Dr. Joseph Carlyle Sitterson and his sister Lavinia Sitterson Anderson. Mr. Sitterson is survived by sons, Simon Carlyle Sitterson III of Atlanta, GA, Carter Chivers Sitterson, Sr. and wife Brenda of Kinston, daughter Mary Frances Sitterson Snider and husband C.L. (Skipper) of Denton, N.C.; six grandchildren, Paige Sitterson Turner and husband Michael, Carter Chivers Sitterson, Jr., Stuart Page Sitterson, Carl Luther Snider, III, Jan Moffet Sitterson, and Spencer Carlyle Snider; and two great-grandchildren, Peyton Blair Turner and Heath Michael Turner. Special thanks to Ruth Wiggins for 8 years of devoted care. Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00PM Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Edwards Funeral Home and at other times at 1900 Cambridge Drive. A funeral service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church at 11:00AM Monday, August 25, 2014. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 800 Rountree St. Kinston, NC 28501 or to the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library, 510 N. Queen St., Kinston, NC 28501.
