Raimond Aldrich Struble
Raimond Aldrich Struble was born in Forest Lake, Minnesota, December 10, 1924 and grew up in Vinton, Iowa. Played Quarter Back for his High School team. He was picked by the Navy to go to Notre Dame. He received his Ph.D. in 1951 with his dissertation: Metric and Measure in Locally Compact Groups. He worked for Douglas Aircraft Company, and was a member of the Illinois Institute of Technology. He worked with NASA in the US Space program on angle requirements for 2nd stage re-entry rockets for Mercury Missions. He joined the faculty of North Carolina State University in 1958 as a Professor of Mathematics. He helped establish the Applied Mathematics Doctorate program as well as producing 12 Ph.D' students in the Mathematics Department. Dr. Struble specialized research was in the areas of Ordinary Differential Equations and Generalized Functions in Operational Calculus. In 1962 he published an internationally recognized graduate text: Nonlinear Differential Equations, that was translated into several languages. In 1966 he had a Sabbadical in Glasgow, Scotland and took his entire family around Europe. NCSU recognized him in 1970 as a Professor Emeritus. He arranged for Dr. Peter Antochik from Poland as an exchange professor, and corrected a long acknowledged mathematical principle of Mijnsky. He retired from NCSU December 1987. He published over 70 articles gaining him international recognition. He also exchanged several letters on mathematics of a double star with Albert Einstein. Dr. Struble continued publishing in an area of Euclidian Geometry as recently as 2009.
His hobbies included coaching pole vaulting, singing, skating, swimming, listening to classical music and ballroom dancing.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marilyn Struble, his sister Janet Hodges, and his five children and their families: Barbara Moore (Baltimore, MD), Gregory Struble (Raleigh, NC), Vince Struble(Raleigh, NC), Michele Ward (Austin, TX), and Wayne Struble (Baltimore/Florida).
Memorial Services will be held Saturday - November 2 at 10:00 AM in the Parlor of Trinity Baptist Church on Six Forks Road in Raleigh.
