Clark Jones Obituary
December 31, 1935 - June 6, 2015
Carrboro, NC
Clark Jones, 79, of Carrboro, NC, has gone on to play center stage in that great folk music festival in the sky. Clark could play numerous stringed instruments: the dulcimer, the hammer dulcimer, fretless banjo, and the autoharp. His voice was strong and full of emotion. He could play over 600 American folk songs from memory.
Though he had an BA in English from UNC-CH, Clark was a folk musician of the old school. He made an album for Folkways Records in the early 1970s. Clark performed for hundreds, if not thousands of children across North Carolina as a visiting artist in numerous elementary, junior and senior high schools.
Clark knew much of the history behind the songs he played- why and when they were written, why they were important, how they reflected and shaped American life. Clark lived inside this music- it made him the unique person he was.
Clark wrote on a typewriter or by hand- never knew from a computer. He knew how to grow vegetables, make and tune instruments, and tell wonderful jokes and stories. His deep, resonant voice was clear as the song of a bird.

Clark is survived by his sister, Ruth Jones Pentes, of Charlotte, NC, a niece, Danna Pentes, of Atlanta, GA., and a nephew, Dorne Pentes, of Charlotte, NC.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Clark's life will be held Sunday, July 12 at 3:30 PM, at the Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle, 200 South Elliot Rd Chapel Hill.
Arrangements are by Knotts Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.

So sad to learn of Clark's passing and send heartfelt sympathy to his family. I was in the NC Visiting Artist program with Clark in the 70s and spent many happy hours sharing a stage with him.

We are so grateful that we had the good fortune to know Clark, and to hear his stories and songs over the years that he played for us at the Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle. He played for our ethics for children program, as well as for our Sunday programs. His music is not gone, we will play his recordings, but we will miss this good and honorable man!
