Born on New Year's Eve in 1920-Joanne arrived after her mother basted the turkey one last time and left her dinner guests to go to the hospital. This auspicious beginning prefaced a full and very creative life. She married Bruce W. Benedict and lived on several Army posts while he served in the U.S. Cavalry. They moved to Santa Barbara in 1952 where they made many friends-one group played bridge every month for over forty years. After Bruce retired, they moved to the Santa Ynez Valley where they planted varietal grapes for home winemakers. Joanne kept Buff Orpington chickens and maintained a huge garden that provided canned veggies and tomato juice for the following year. She also grew and sold dried flowers. At that time she joined a quilting group and created many fabulous, prize-winning quilts over the following years. They returned to Santa Barbara in the mid-1990s. After Bruce's death, Joanne took up watercolor, joining several local art associations and actively exhibited her work. One body of work, a group of local homes, was shown at the Faulkner Gallery in the main library. She loved reading, playing Scrabble, thrift shopping and above all, she loved her family and many friends. She is survived by two daughters, Hope Werness and Julie Odette, three grandchildren (Amy, Maline and Matthew) and two great grandchildren (Adele and Jack). She requested no funeral; rememberances can be sent to the Santa Barbara Foundation, 1111 Chapala Street, Suite 200 Santa Barbara, CA 93101
