84, passed away on June 24, 2016 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital after a brief illness. Mary was born in Medford, Massachusetts on May 6, 1932 to James Mehigan and Nora O'Connell Mehigan. After graduating from St. John High School in 1950, she was employed by the John Hancock Insurance Company in Boston. In March of 1951, she met Navy Yeoman 3/C Petty Officer Elbert (Larry) Brown who would become the love of her life. After he completed his service, they were married at St. John Church on November 3, 1951 and moved to Belleville, New Jersey. They remained devoted to each other for 64 years. Four children were born in New Jersey and then in 1957 the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona where two more children were born. Mary worked as an aide at Phoenix General Hospital. In 1970 they moved to Santa Barbara, where she was employed by the Santa Barbara County Medical Clinic. Mary had a love of travel and in later years they visited dozens of countries (including the Soviet Union and Ireland, where she connected with her extended family). They saw all 50 states and once made a 12,000 mile road trip from Santa Barbara to Newfoundland and back. She formed friendships everywhere she went, including some that lasted decades. Mary is survived by her husband, Larry, and her children Patricia (Brown) Lockwood, David Brown and his wife, Teri, Kenneth Brown, Gary Brown and his wife, Kathy, and daughter-in-law Lori Brown. She was preceded in death by her son Kevin Brown and daughter Virginia Brown. Eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive her. She was devoted to her family and had a passion for service to anyone who could use her help. Her generous and loving nature will be sorely missed. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 1, 2016 at 10 a.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic Church.
