Dorothy slept peacefully into the Lord's embrace in the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 2013. She was born in Texas, to Mollie Edith and Paul W. Carrell, on May 18, 1929. The family settled in Newhall, CA where her dad opened the Carrell Chevrolet Agency.
She enrolled in University of California Santa Barbara, attending the Riviera campus, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 1952. Playing the baritone horn, she performed in Dr. Faulkner's Brass Choir. Dorothy was a founding and charter member (1962) of the Santa Barbara chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an International Society of Woman Educators. Upon completing a 34 year teaching career in Santa Barbara School District, she retired in 1988. She taught at Wilson School from 1954 - 1979, and Peabody School from 1979 - 1988. Her many students remember her fondly for her caring concern and quick wit, as she masterfully guided their on task learning. Class stage productions were memorable.
Dorothy was an active supporter of the Santa Barbara Youth Theatre Productions back in the 1960's and 70's. She was a dedicated board member and also active as the production coordinator and prop master for many of their productions.
Dorothy made many friends as the music director at San Roque Catholic Church from 1988 to 1994. For years she greeted many loyal customers at the Four Winds and the Tree House restaurants.
Residing in a Maravilla Court suite since 2008, Dorothy enhanced that community by looking out for others, spreading loving good cheer, running the store and winning at Bingo! She will be missed!!
Predeceased beloved include her sister, Betty Jane Carrell Schield (2012) and her life-long soul mate Helen "Mac" MacDonald (2001). She leaves a niece, Marti Lamb (Redding, CA) and nephews Tom Schield (Santa Clarita, CA) and Bob Schield (Great Falls, MT) and her devoted caregivers, Betty Guereca and Joan Blanco.

Dorothy was always such a kind, compassionate woman. I was a young student getting my undergraduate degree when I was an aide at Peabody. Dorothy encouraged me to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher. She validated me and encoraged me to strive to be the best I could be for my students. She was a beautiful person. My thoughts are with her loved ones.

I was a pprivate caregiver for Dorothy and I will always have fond memories of her. She was a very passionate and caring soul, even sending me to go check on her neighbors if she hadn't seen them out in the dining hall for a couple of days. She sure had lots of interesting stories and told each one with a sparkle in her eye as she would reminisc. RIP dear Dorothy. You are very loved.

Ms. Carrell was my 6th grade teacher at Peaboby School. I am thankful for the wisdom and energy she shared with me. She helped to shape me into the person I am today. Thank you Ms. Carrell.

I remember Ms. Carrell at Wilson school almost 60 years ago. I did not have her as a teacher, but you could not resist her engaging smile and spirit.
I ran into her in the last year or so, and mentioned it to some of my old friends who had had her for a teacher; they were so excited to send best wishes to her, and she was thrilled to hear this.
One comment was "she was a teacher who really made a difference".

May her family and friends find peace and comfort in their shared memories and the knowledge of how many young lives were impacted by such a fine Lady. I was a student in her third grade class at Wilson Elementary school (56'/'57) and Miss. Carrell helped me through some difficult emotions. My father had been hospitalized numerous times prior to his death in January '58 and she was always there with many kind words of encourgement. I will always remember her with great fondness.
