Michael Creek

Passed away this week at the age of 59 after a hard fought battle with cancer.

Mike was a native Santa Barbarian. Born at Cottage Hospital he grew up on Barker Pass and attended Cold Springs Elementary, SBJH and Santa Barbara High School. After enlisting in the US Army and serving as a Field Wireman, Michael graduated from Brown University of Minneapolis with his degree in Broadcast Journalism. Working his way home through many states and levels of broadcasting, he brought his talent back to Santa Barbara to share with us all in his amazing program: The Rendezvous with Michael Creek, Jazz with a Touch of Soul. Although he lived in many places close to family and loved ones, Mike's heart was always drawn back to Santa Barbara. He loved the ocean, the mountains, his friends and family and the fact that Santa Barbara was home.

Mike loved sports, music, dancing and life. If music was playing, Mike was singing, dancing or playing the spoons - sometimes all three at once. All who knew him can close their eyes and picture that. He was a regular at the golf course (any course that was handy) and loved to throw a bowling ball down the lanes. An avid fisherman, Mike would never turn down a chance to jump on a boat and put a line in the water. Through his activities in life and his years at KMGQ and KTYD, working for the city at the Harbor or caring for the elderly at the Laguna Cottages, Mike touched many people's lives in Santa Barbara and wherever he went. Mike was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend - but most of all he was a loving, caring person who put his own life on hold to devote several years to the co- caregiving of his mother, Anne, in her final years. The memory of Mike's joyful soul and sense of humor will forever bring a smile to those who love him.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Dale and Anne Creek and is survived by his loving brothers; Jim (Debbie), Dale (Debra), Gary, his twin sister Sharon (Steve), nephews; Austin, Christopher and many extended family and dear friends. Michael was and is loved. He will be missed.

To honor Mike's wishes a gathering will be held, not to mourn his passing but to celebrate his life, at Manning Park on Friday, September 20, from Noon- sunset. Please bring your own picnic to join the family in celebrating. (a large grill with hot coals will be available for use) Mike requested that in lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make donations to the SurfRider Foundation to keep the coastline he loved, the way he loved it.
