(11/11/30 - 8/15/14)
On August 15, 2014 a bright light went out, at least on earth. Since then the world has not been the same for her family and friends who miss her very much, already.
Arlette, a long-time resident of SB, passed peacefully in her home after a long battle with MDS/Leukemia. Born in Chicago, as Arlette Carol Duykers (then, Favell), she eventually relocated to San Bernardino where she met and married her high-school sweetheart, Rodney E. Houghton, a fellow "Aggie," who was her passion for 46 years, until his passing.
Arlette will be remembered as a big-hearted "character" who took a deep interest in people. She enjoyed volunteering for sick children and others less fortunate. She could be described as hard-working, imaginative and creative, intelligent, strong, energetic, and loyal to those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Arlette faithfully served as an Air Force wife on more than ten assignments spanning 22 years, from the U.S. to Morocco, Spain, Hawaii, and the Philippines. At each relocation, she quickly met the challenge to establish a home and a life for the family, making many friends along the way (at one point her Christmas card list was over 300 people!).
Arlette enjoyed living in Santa Barbara, where she had a reputation as a private swim instructor, influencing students from 6 months to adult. Many went on to succeed at local and NCAA swimming events. She was also an avid reader, conversationalist, guitar player, and gardener.
Arlette was the committed wife of Ret. Lt. Col. Rodney E. Houghton, loving Mother to son Christopher Briggs Houghton of south Florida, and daughter Shawn Houghton, of Santa Barbara/SF Bay Area (now living in France). She is also survived by Bruce Duykers, Norma Duykers and family, and Mrs. Warren (Joey) Houghton and family. Arlette adored the nursing staff at Cottage Hospital, and her caregiver, Kitty, to whom the family is grateful for their love and attention.
A family ceremony will be held at the S.B. Cemetery's Urn Garden on September 20 followed by a gathering for those wishing to attend. Please contact Shawn for details: [email protected]. Arlette generously supported the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and has requested, in lieu of flowers, that others consider a donation as well (Please contact Stacy Ale at [email protected], or visit www.pva.org ).
Her family would like to wish all who knew her peace and comfort at this time. Let us share in the joy of her homecoming--She is finally free, and most likely singing and dancing with the angels! (p.s. Hope you liked it, Mom!)

I will always remember being one of "Arlette's Aquatots" in the late 60s! My Aunt Arlette taught me to swim and love the water - a gift I have enjoyed my whole life! She was an energetic, funny, strong lady who was fun to be around. She will be deeply missed.

She was amazing! Truly unique and one of a kind! My Cadillac soulmate and dear friend.
I remember Arlette as one of my favorite aunts. She was so pretty, active, musical and just a whole lot of fun. She taught me how to Hawaiian dance!

OUR FATHER in Heaven:
Thank you for the gift of my Mother and her vibrant life which she shared with many in her community of Santa Barbara. May your Spirit draw close to those who mourn, and may they be comforted by your promise to complete the work that you started. She was baptised and professed her faith in God until the end. To Christ be the glory! Amen.
