Carol Lossing Obituary

Of Lompoc died at her home, Friday, March 14, 2014, at the age of 69.

Carol was born June 14, 1944, in Fresno, California to Orville Lackey and Pearl Terry. At the age of 21, she enrolled in a nursing program at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. While a nursing student, Carol met her future husband, Dr. Thomas Lossing. Tom and Carol married in 1970, joined the U S Army Medical Corps and Army Nurse Corps, respectively and were stationed in Uijonbu, South Korea. Carol worked as a Med-Surg nurse at the last MASH hospital in country and Tom was a Captain at the 125th Medical Detachment. Carol gave her all to her patients often working the night shift with corpsmen who had no more than six weeks of training. She gained a spectrum of experience and confidence and gave her all to others. Living in Korea provided a valuable cultural experience and provided access to several other countries.

Moving to Santa Barbara in 1980, she worked at Goleta Valley Hospital and in1999, she came to Lompoc where she worked in her husband's office. Later that year she was found to have extensive malignant lymphoma. She endured extensive chemotherapy, radiation and ultimately a stem cell transplant. She achieved remission and although she experienced some debilitating side effects, she continued to love life and pushed herself to experience it.

Carol loved Lompoc, Maui, her roses, her two Siberian Huskies and especially her three grandchildren. She once said she would be happy if she lived long enough to see her son get married and to hold her grandchildren. These all came true. She loved to travel and went to Alaska, around the Gaspe Peninsula of Canada, to the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand and through the Panama Canal.

Carol is survived by her husband of 44 years, Dr. Thomas Lossing, her son David Lossing and his wife Noel, her three grandchildren Emma, Olivia and Logan Lossing, all of Lompoc and her brother, Lance Lackey of Oakhurst California.

There will be a viewing at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 22, 2014 followed by a funeral service at 3:00 pm at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary Chapel, 123 North A Street, Lompoc, California.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society at 1432 Chapala St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.
