Passed on peacefully August 14, 2013 at Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, among loved ones.

John was born to Timothy J. Sullivan and Margaret V. Sullivan of Ireland (both deceased) in Lawrence, MA on September 14, 1919. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940, was commissioned in 1952 and served for 27 years. John was stationed at the Navy Recruiting Station, San Francisco, Naval Missile Test Center Pt Mugu, US Navy Base San Diego, Submarine Base Pearl Harbor, HI, and Sandpoint Naval Air Station, WA among others. Following coursework at UC Berkeley and University of Washington, he specialized in preventive medicine as a member of the Navy Medical Service Corp. He retired from the Navy as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 in 1967, after serving meritoriously in 3 wars (WWII, Korea and Vietnam), with many tours in submarines. He then served 15 years in the California State Health Services as District Administrator, Santa Barbara, retiring in 1982. He was an avid golfer and physical fitness advocate and a long time Santa Barbara YMCA member. He ushered at the Saturday evening mass at St. Raphael's Catholic church for many years, was a member of Submarine Veterans of WWII, Military Officer's Association and other organizations.

John married Alma Murray of MA (deceased) in 1940 and Mae Ramirez (deceased) of San Francisco in 1948. He moved to Santa Barbara in 1973 where he continued raising his large family, celebrating their graduations, weddings and the births of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His constant companion and partner for the last 31 years was Vivian Ramey who passed on in March, 2013. He will be greatly missed and remembered for the strength it took to raise a large family, his Catholic faith, charm, quick wit and sense of humor, and his determination to remain fit and independent into his later years. He is survived by his children: Maureen Rodarte, Colfax; Kerry West, Cupertino; Kathleen Sullivan(Joseph Caggiano), El Cerrito; Kevin Sullivan, Sydney Australia; K. Michael Sullivan, Clifton, VA and Megan Sullivan (Farrell Odendhal), Santa Barbara as well as his grandchildren, Brett, Ryan and Eric Rodarte, Lauren Sullivan, Timothy West and 10 great grandchildren, niece Mary Sullivan and nephews Donald and Dan Sullivan. A rosary will be held Thursday, August 29 at 7PM and a Memorial Mass August 30 at 10AM, both at St. Raphael's Catholic Church with interment following at Calvary Cemetery, Santa Barbara. A Celebration of Life will follow at St. Raphael's Catholic Church Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Raphael's Church, YMCA or charity of your choice.
