Born August 9, 1924, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Roy passed away peacefully on July 7th, 2014, after a brief illness. A retired engineer, he was a graduate (Magna Cum Laude) of Holy Cross College, Worcester, Massachusetts and served in the Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician in WWII and in the Korean Crisis. He was active in both St. Barbara's and San Roque Parishes, serving on the parish councils, committees, and was a Lector, Commentator, and Eucharistic Minister. After retirement from Raytheon Company, where he worked for twenty-nine years, he taught evenings at S.B. City College. Past President of the Santa Barbara Astronomy Club, he was an instructor in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons. His poetry won ribbons at the Santa Barbara Fair and Expo.

Roy is survived by his wife of 67 years, Constance Riel, a son, Robert Riel of Australia, and two daughters, Deborah Dal Zuffo of Santa Barbara and Rebecca Riel of Northern California, seven grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers Reverend Joseph Riel, S. J., a missionary in Jamaica for 42 years, Arthur Riel, Jr., a professor at Fairfield University in Connecticut, and a sister, Sister Marguerite Marie, S.N.D., a missionary in Japan.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 17th, at Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapels Santa Barbara location, with Rosary at 3:00 p.m.; Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Friday, July 18th at Saint Barbara's Parish, Old Mission.
