The Guest Book is expired.

Died Sunday, October 6, 2013, at his home in Santa Barbara, from kidney failure. He was 90 years old and lived a very long and full life. Ardy was born on January 28, 1923, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to Toras and Elizabeth Vartanian. He was baptized Ardavast Vartanian, the third son in a family of four boys and one girl. He is survived by his surviving younger brother, Byron Barton, of Bradenton, Florida, and his younger sister, Gladys Bailey, of Anacortes, Washington, as well as four nieces, Janet Lemette of California, Keran Wilke of California, Betty Rucker in England, and Lori Bailey Cunningham in Washington.

At 16 years of age, Ardy and an older brother left Rhode Island to hitchhike across the United States to Los Angeles in 1939. He attended John Marshall High School in Los Angeles where he enjoyed and excelled in playing football. After graduating he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in the Naval Air Corp; he was in an airplane crash which left him with a severe knee injury and he was honorably discharged. Ardy, who took the surname Barton, then went to USC where he obtained his BA degree, and on to USC Law School, from which he graduated and was admitted to the Bar in 1948. He practiced law in Los Angeles before moving to Santa Barbara where he continued to practice law for the next fifty plus years. In the early 1960's Ardy was Assistant City Attorney.

Ardy Barton had a passion for playing tennis and attained national ranking in Seniors' play - he played in tournaments well into his 80's. He enjoyed and appreciated classical art, books, travel (particularly to London and France), and he spoke excellent French. He was very well-read, and enjoyed sharing his opinions with the few persons he was willing to discuss them with. Ardy had a strong conviction of what he felt was right and was tenacious in his defense of his contentions. He will be missed by his family and friends, in, on and off the court.
