Wang, Gary K.
Gary Wang (Wang Kuo Pin) of Redding, CT died on October 3, 2013 from cancer. Gary was born on July 17, 1950 in Hong Kong to the parents of P.C. Wang and Y.J. Chu Wang. Gary spent his early years in Taiwan, where as a young child he exhibited exceptional artistic talent that was nurtured by professional training and the support of his mother. Gary graduated from Taiwan University in 1972 with a BA degree in Chinese Literature. Following two years of military service in Taiwan, Gary moved to the United States in 1975, where he earned an additional degree in Interior Design from the New York School of Interior Design.
Gary became an accomplished textile designer and owned and operated his own textile design business for the next thirty years. His designs were frequently featured by some of the top design houses in the country.
In 2002, Gary embarked on a new creative venture in Shanghai when he joined with his long-time friend, Jeremy Kuo, to form Spin, a ceramic design studio and retailer that produces unique ceramic house wares with a modern Chinese aesthetic. As Spin's Art Director Gary led Spin's design team and was instrumental in making Spin an international success.
Gary enjoyed cooking and sharing elegantly presented meals with family and friends. He had a discerning appreciation for antiques and was an accomplished oil painter.
He leaves a husband, Thomas Hamilton of Redding; his sisters, Josephine Wang of Redding and Catherine Hsu of Malden, MA; a son, Isa Wang of Boston, MA; three step-daughters: Laura, Rachel, and Jeanette Hamilton; his sister-in-law Rosa Wang; his niece Mimi Ho; and his nephews Dennis Ho, Andrew Hsu, Jason Hsu, Hans Wang, Sean Wang and their spouses, partners, and children. His brother, James Wang, predeceased him.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at the Unitarian Church in Westport, 10 Lyons Plains Road, Westport, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the CT Stonewall Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 6133, Hamden, CT 06517
