Jeremiah B. (Jerry) McKenna, 80, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 in New Milford, CT following a 10-year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Jerry was born in Bronx, NY to Irish immigrant parents and made a career in the law in New York State. Upon graduating from Columbia University Law School in 1958, Jerry served as
Assistant D.A. for Manhattan District Attorney Frank Hogan from 1958 through 1965 in the Organized Crime Bureau. Jerry was also part of the legal team that argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in the case Berger v. New York, 388 U.S. 41 (1967), which helped to
define the limits of legal wiretapping. He later served as Counsel to the New York State Legislative Committee on Crime and Correction under New York State Senators Ralph Marino and Christopher Mega, where he played a role in the shaping of the Rockefeller drug laws and
other important pieces of New York State Crime legislation. Jerry and his wife of 57 years, Nettie Rementeria McKenna, first came to the New Milford area in the early 1980s, when their daughters attended The Canterbury School in New Milford. They came to love the area and chose to retire here in 2003. Jerry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nettie R. McKenna; and his sisters, Dorothy Treyball of Pound Ridge, NY; Rosaleen McKenna and Pat Colbert of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He is also survived by three daughters, Hilary McKenna of New Milford, CT; Abigail McKenna of New York, NY; and Amy Omana, also of New Milford, CT; and five grandchildren. There will be no calling hours and the interment will be private. A mass or Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford, CT, on Monday, March 24, at 1:00 PM. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the New Milford Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice Program; The
of CT; or St. Francis Xavier Parish, LifeTeen Program.
