Michael Skandera

Michael Skandera, 89, of Danbury, beloved husband of Anne (Parnas) Skandera, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, March 28, 2014. Michael was born in Danbury, son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth (Holick) Skandera. He was a graduate of Danbury High School and the former Danbury State Teachers College. He went on to receive his Ed.D. from Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City, and was a master teacher in Ridgefield public schools for forty-five years.
A captain in the US Army Air Force, he was a 50-mission bomber pilot in World War II. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he served as superintendent of the Sunday school, and a longtime member of Danbury Sokol Lodge #30, where he participated in gymnastics and served as a vice-president. An avid golfer with five holes-in-one and numerous tournament wins, he was an active member of the Ridgewood Country Club. He also received a sports award from the Old Timers Athletic Association of Greater Danbury. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Mark Skandera of Bethlehem, PA and Randall Skandera of Danbury, his brother Emil Skandera of Danbury, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, John and Daniel Skandera and sisters Elizabeth Van Geons and Anne Curesky. Funeral services will be held St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 44 Spring St., Danbury, on Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.
