Sharkany, Robert A.
Robert A. Sharkany, 83, of Ridgefield, husband of Gloria (Lavatori) Sharkany and father of Patrick Sharkany of Bethel, died on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Laurel Ridge Health Care, Ridgefield after a valiant battle with cancer. Mr. Sharkany was born in East Norwalk, CT, September 10, 1930, son of Stephen and Marie (Bolough) Sharkany. A Ridgefield resident for the past forty-six years, Bob previously resided in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn before moving to East Norwalk, CT with his family in the 1950's. He attended Brooklyn schools and Brooklyn Technical High School due to his love of all things automotive and mechanical. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in the Class of 1946. A U.S. Army veteran, Bob served his country during the Korean War and was stationed in France from 1951 to 1953. He was a proud member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. of Norwalk. Bob was employed as an Engineering Technician with Perkin Elmer for thirty nine years. He worked extensively on the Hubble Telescope and numerous optical programs during the Cold War. Bob loved the many members of his extended family and his numerous friends. He enjoyed nature, science, history, tending to his large garden and tinkering with automobiles. He was always willing to help his friends and neighbors as was often referred to as "Mr. Fix It". Bob devoted much of his retirement to assisting friends and family with rides to doctor appointments and comfort to them when medical conditions prevailed. For this, he also earned the nickname of "Dr. Bob". He was a member of St. Mary Parish of Ridgefield. Bob will be remembered as a devoted family man who loved his country and proudly served when called. He was always available to help someone in need and offer a warm smile when doing so. In addition to his wife and son, he is also survived by two brothers, Richard Sharkany of Guilford, CT and Edward Sharkany of Whispering Pines, NC; cousins, Ronald and Virginia Seaburg, Alan and Nancy Sharkany, Tony and Lois Johnston and Marcia and Scotty Clark; as well as brother and sisters in law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 10:15am in St. Mary Church, 55 Catoonah St., Ridgefield. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Ridgefield in the spring. The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield on Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 5pm to 8pm. The family wishes to thank the caring staff of River Glen Health Care of Southbury and Laurel Ridge Health Care of Ridgefield. They also wish to thank the many friends and relatives who offered prayers and assistance during Bob's final days. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Ridgefield Fire Dept.
