Thomas Hayden

Hayden, Thomas G.
Thomas G. Hayden, 80, died on April 15th following a brief illness. He lived at The Cascades assisted living in Bethel, CT. He was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1934, the third son to Harry and Muriel (Natter) Hayden. He attended primary school at Rumsey Hall Academy in Washington, CT and was a 1934 graduate of Greenwich High School. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army after receiving his diploma and studied drafting at University of Bridgeport following his discharge. Tom married Marie Schwam in 1962 and together they raised three sons. He worked as an optical designer-engineer at Perkin-Elmer in a career initially developing satellite technology and later developing optics for the Hubble Space Telescope. He enjoyed working and retired only reluctantly when complications from Parkinson's disease slowed him down. In his free time Tom enjoyed spending time with his family and doing things around the house. He took his boys on many marathon walks around NYC and loved to go on day trips in the car and sailing on Long Island Sound. He collected tools and was unusually good at fixing things. His specialty was fixing and tuning small engines. Tom is survived by his sons: Matthew and wife Beth Buchanan of Fremont, CA, Douglas of Ridgefield, CT, and Andrew and his wife Ikue Suzuki and their sons Yuta and Hiro of Essex Junction, VT, his elder brother Gerard in Indianapolis, IN and his cousin Patricia Meyer of New Haven, CT. Tom's wife Marie predeceased him in 2011. A memorial service will be held at Cascades Assisted Living in mid-May. Tom's ashes will be interred next to Marie's in a niche of the Memorial Garden at the Congregational Church of Brookfield, CT. Arrangements by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury.
