Mabel Honan Obituary

Mabel Anderson Honan died on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Haven-wood convalescence in Concord, N. H. She was 100 years old, born on July 22, 1910 in New Milford the youngest of four sisters. She was ahead of her time as a woman who dedicated herself to and enjoyed success in many types of work in addition to raising a family. Before she was 16, she provided care to the children of a neighbor. When she reached employment age she worked as a clerk in Barton's Department Store. Upon graduation from New Milford High School she joined Southern New England Telephone as an operator and worked there while she studied banking Her banking studies led to employment with New Milford Savings Bank. It was while working there, that she married Tom Honan. This led to two children and eventually brought her to Gaylordsville where she and Tom raised their family while running Honan's Store and the Gaylordsville Post Office. Mabel retired as Post Master there in 1984 and moved to Canterbury, New Hampshire to live near her daughter. Eventually she moved to Heritage Heights/ Havenwood, an assisted living community in Concord where she became a well known and loved resident. Her daughter, Kay Cushman of Canterbury, New Hampshire; her son, Tom Honan of Olympia, Washington; and her granddaughter, Kyle Cushman of Marshfield, Vermont, survive her. Her family will hold a private ceremony. She will be buried at Morningside Cemetery in Gaylordsville next to her husband Tom.
