Margaret Hooton Obituary

Margaret J. Hooton (Maggie), age 68, of Riverton, West Virginia died from a massive cerebral hemorrhage on December 2, 2010 in Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg, West Virginia. Maggie was born in Waterbury, September 3, 1942. She was the only child of Helen Silks Jakubauskas and Constantine Jakubauskas. Maggie taught creative writing and English at Danbury High School for 15 years. She met and married, fellow teacher, Art Hooton and they moved to Riverton, West Virginia in 1980, where they found "almost heaven" on earth and built a homestead that embodied the qualities of the life they valued. Maggie was both a seeker and a visionary. Everything she did was filtered through a deep appreciation for the beauty of the present moment, respect for the interconnected web of life and for the careful use and management of nature's gifts. She was an avid gardener and demonstrated her love of life and passion for all things artistic. She was a gifted craftswoman with the sewing machine, a writer, a poet, a musician and a talented painter. She reflected the same creative ingenuity when she cooked and preserved food grown on their family farm at Timber Ridge. Maggie brought these values and skills to her work life: Her West Virginia resume included employment at the Potomac Highlands Guild in Petersburg, the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, The Mountain Institute at Spruce Knob, as well as Future Generations in Franklin. In 1999, Maggie's entrepreneurial, dynamic and creative spirit gave birth to a web design business, Red Eft Web Design, which created and managed web sites locally in West Virginia and across the country. From her office/studio sky room on the side of Spruce Knob, she entered and touched the lives of many people. Her legacy will live on in her good works and in the heart of her husband Art and her cat, Ping. She leaves behind a basket of mending, a full larder, opened paint containers and an unfinished watercolor of a lovely bunch of carrots. Clearly, her intention was to live much longer than she did. A memorial service will be celebrated in May when the apple trees are next in bloom. Memories and remembrances may be shared at Red Eft Web Design: www.redeft.com Contributions in her memory may be made to the Pendleton Animal Welfare Shelter(PAWS) P.O. Box 804, Franklin, WVA 26807.

Maggie you touched me so deeply during my time at "the Institute". I will always remember riding with you in the van and your exuberant laughter. She really helped me understand how to release negative energy and bring out the good in others. I cultivating my love of writing because of you. Love you and miss you!

Mrs.Hooton was earth shoe sandals, boiled wool sweaters, a cluttered desk but most certainly an open mind, her hands talked as fast as her mouth, funny, kind hearted, unpredictable and so much more. She inspired the "inner souls" of not only her students but everyone she knew. My depest sympathy to Art Hooton.

My sympathies are extended to you Mr Hooten. Your wife taught one of my favorite classes where I could write all my thoughts in the " source book" that I still have and treasure. She inspired me to go for what I wanted including running on the boys track team when the girls team did not exist yet and run in road races wehn few women were running them in Danbury. It was great to see her at the finish lines. She allowed each person in her class to be as unique as they wanted to be, just as she was uniquely special to many of us. She was a hoot and will be missed. I hope there are teachers out there to inspire my son the way she inspired me to create with a pen and paper. May she rest in Peace or in her case Run on Forever.

maggie was a good person. i used to work with her in wva. she was great at what she did and she did not hestitate to stand up for herself or others. i gave her a bunch of blue glass canning jars once. she also turned me on to these old tercel station wagons. the last time i saw her was at the harpers ferry craft festival about ten years ago.

Dear Art, David and I were stunned when we saw Maggie's obit in the N-T! We have just spent our dinner and beyond reminiscing about not only the two of you at DHS but the truly unforgettable time we spent looking for and finding you first home in W.V. She's leaving a big hole behind. As ever, Ingrid & David

My sincere condolences to you, Mr. Hooten. I was so saddened to hear of Mrs. Hooten's death. She was one of my favorite teachers at Danbury High School. She encouraged me to "think outside the box" before that was even popular, and encouraged my love of writing and reading. I will never forget her.....I still have my "source book" that we used in her creative writing class. I will miss her....rest in peace Mrs. Hooten.

Ms. Hooton made a footprint on my heart the day I met her. She was by far, the most impressionable creative writing teacher!! I can still hear her telling me to put my writing "in the fridge" to cool off. I often think of her, as I have continued my writing through the years.
Rest in Peace Ms. Hooton, the next one I write is for you!

Condolences to Art, we lost a good one. Maggie would have us accentuate the positive, and we are very fortunate and gifted to have trod the Earth in the same era as this wonderful person.

Mrs Hooten was my favorite teacher at DHS. She fostered my love of writing and encouraged me to look deeper inside of myself when writing. I still have my journal, which she had the class keep to write in daily. She also further inspired my desire to be a teacher. I was inspired by her love of life and her enthusiasm for sharing it with her students. She was an amazing woman, one I am fortunate to have as a teacher. Mr. Hooten, I am deeply sorry for your loss.

As a teacher myself, I often find myself trying to emulate Mrs. Hooton. She was an inspiration to her students. I can still picture her taking her daily run no matter what the weather. My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Hooton.
