Paul E. Billings, 86, a lifelong resident of Danbury and the beloved husband of Peggy (Green) Billings died peacefully at Danbury Hospital on February 3, 2014.
Paul was born in Danbury to the late Paul and Gertrude Schoonmaker Billings. He attended Danbury Schools and was a graduate of Henry Abbott Technical School.
Always involved in local sports, Paul was a renowned catcher for the Top Hat Team in the city baseball league. He was almost drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers, but the US Army drafted him first. He served honorably as a staff sergeant during WWII. After his discharge, he married the "Peg of his heart", to whom he was married to for 64 years.
Paul was also a dedicated employee of SNET retiring in 1988 after 40 years of service.
Paul was proud to receive the Danbury Old Timers Sports Award in 1994 for his exceptional athleticism.
In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by his son, Paul, and his wife, June. His daughters: Linda Burrell and her husband, Hugh and Joanne Loftus and her husband, Michael. His grandchildren: Meaghan Loftus, Matthew Loftus, Deirdre Loftus and Elizabeth Billings. His brother: Donald. His sister-in-laws: Sylvia Billings, Jane Zurinskas and Nancy Sheridan. His brother-in-laws: Richard Zeitler and his wife, Elaine. Many beloved nieces and nephews also survive.
Paul was predeceased by his brother, Robert, and his sister, Louise Zeitler.
Paul had a deep appreciation for the simple things in life. He loved nature, his home and he would frequently be seen mowing his well-manicured lawn. Paul was known for his sharp wit and was always the life of the party. He was so loved by all and he be greatly missed.
Funeral Services will be conducted Friday at 11am at St. Gregory the Great Church, Danbury. Burial will follow in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 4pm to 7pm at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.
