Walter Garett Obituary

Walter A. Garett (Gontarski), age 92 of Bethel , passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the Pope John Paul II Center. Mr. Garett was born and raised in New York. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a Light Tank Crewman in the 1st Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division in H Company, 3rd Battalion. He entered service on September 4, 1941; he served during the European Theater of Operations, was a POW and honorably discharged from the military on October 12, 1945. He was a retired electrician, loved playing his accordion and an avid golfer. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Garett; sister, Jean Tuttle; and brother, Adam Gontarski. He is survived by his younger sister, Joan Wieczkiewicz and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 20. The family wishes that memorial contributions be directed to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 46 Stone Street, Danbury, CT 06810.
