Evans, Walter E.
Walter E. Evans, 88, of Ridgefield, husband of Marlene (Walter) Evans, died on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Laurel Ridge Health Care Center, Ridgefield. Mr. Evans was born in Ridgefield, August 4, 1925, son of Walter O. and Augusta (Stahl) Evans. He attended Ridgefield schools, spending his first four school years in the Old Branchville Schoolhouse, which packed four grades into a single classroom. He moved to the high school on East Ridge in 1934. Mr. Evans graduated from Bryant College. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. While stationed overseas in Australia, he played baseball against future Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto. In 1947, Mr. Evans was employed with the Gilbert & Bennett Wire Mill of Georgetown retiring in 1987 as its treasurer. He served as a past director of the former Ridgefield Bank, president of the Branchville Fresh Air Association, a trustee of the Ridgefield Cemetery Association and treasurer of the Ridgefield Old Timers Association. Mr. Evans was honored by the Old Timers Athletic Association for his athleticism. He played sandlot baseball for the Branchville Civics, and later turned to softball in the Townie's league and won many championships. Walter played first base for both teams. Retiring from baseball and softball, he turned to bowling and later to golf. In addition to his wife, Mr. Evans is survived by a son, Mark E. Evans and his wife, Danette of Littleton, CO; his step-children, Gregg Garofalo and his wife, Suzanne of Newtown, CT, Richard Garofalo and his wife, Beverly of Wethersfield, CT, Lisa Fritz and Terri Fisher and her husband, John of Durham, CT and eleven grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Evans was predeceased by a sister, Arline Evans Turoczi. Funeral services will take place on Monday, August 11th, 2014 at 1PM in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield with the Rev. Dr. Charles Hambrick-Stowe, Senior Pastor of the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield officiating.
Interment will take place in Fairlawn Cemetery, Ridgefield with military honors. The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, Ridgefield on Monday, August 11th from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Contributions may be made to the Old Timers Athletic Association of Ridgefield, Scholarship Fund, 24 Bailey Avenue, Ridgefield, CT 06877.
