William P. (Bill) Shannon 77, of Bethel, CT and his beloved wife of 53 years, Jane D. Shannon both died as a result of an automobile accident on January 28, 2014.
Bill was born in Danbury on May 27, 1936 to the late John A. and Margaret (Gallagher) Shannon. Bill grew up in Danbury and attended local schools.
Bill served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. After the service Bill became an apprentice steamfitter in July 1957 with the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 303 in Danbury.
Bill met the love of his life Jane D. Shannon in 1959 and they were married September 3, 1960.
Bill worked for 30 years as a plumber/steamfitter before becoming the Business Agent for the CT Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 777 in 1987. Bill was then was elected Business Manager for the Statewide CT Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 777 in 1996, retiring in 1999.
Bill then accepted a part time position as Executive Director of the Connecticut Construction Labor Management Council. He worked tirelessly to safeguard workers' rights for over 50 years. His dedication impacted workers across the State of Connecticut.
Over the years Bill served on many boards and commissions both locally and on the state level, most recently on the Goodwill Board of Directors and the Bethel Charter Revision Commission.
In 1975 Bill ran for Selectman in the Town of Bethel and served with Francis J. Clarke from 1975 to 1981, and upon the untimely death of Mr. Clarke, Bill served as First Selectman for the remaining months of their term. Bill also proudly served as a Bethel Police Commissioner from 1984 to 1991.
Bill also served on, and was Chairman of both the Berry School and the Bethel High School Building Committees. Hel was a member of the Bethel Democratic Town Committee and served as an incorporator for Union Savings Bank. He held a special place in his heart for Ann's Place The Home of I Can in Danbury.
Bill is survived by his son William P. Shannon Jr. and his wife Carolsue of Southbury, Marjorie J. Shannon of Danbury and Patricia A. Cafero and her husband William of Randolph, NJ, along with his 5 beloved grandsons E.J. Shannon, Jack Shannon, Christopher Cafero, Michael Cafero and Matthew Cafero. He will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by his 6 siblings, John Shannon, Edward Shannon, Nancy Potts, J. Richard Shannon, Robert Shannon and Katherine Curran.
The family will receive friends on Monday February 3, 2014 from 3:00 to 8:00pm at Saint Mary Church, 24 Dodgingtown Road, Bethel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at 11:00am at Saint Mary Church with burial following at St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
