Manuel Simoes, Sr., passed away at Danbury Hospital on February 28th 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Manny was born in Lousa, Portugal, son of the late Domingos and Ernestina (da Piedade) Simoes. He was the beloved husband of Elvira (Marques) Simoes, his wife of 61 years. Manny came to the United States in 1947. He was employed for many years by Luke F. Sweeney Construction Company, until his retirement. He served in the Armed Forces during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Jack and Carmelinda, and his beautiful granddaughter, Manisa. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Carolinda Simoes-Velt and her husband Victor of North Branford; two sons, Manuel Simoes, Jr., and his wife Lisa, of Sandy Hook; and Arthur Simoes and his wife, Leslie of West Hartford; a grandson, Manuel Simoes III; and two granddaughters, Isabella and Mia Simoes; a sister-in-law, Lucy Simoes; two nieces, a nephew and several cousins. Manny loved above all to be with his family; he loved dancing, and listening to classical music. He was a member of the VFW; Amerigo Vespucci Club; the Portuguese Cultural Center and St. Peter Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church, on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Peter Cemetery. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, on Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of the 10th floor Step Down Unit at Danbury Hospital for their compassionate care and attention to Manny and his family.
