Dzendzel, George
George John Dzendzel, 73, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, after a long battle with colon cancer. Funeral: 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the , Colon Cancer Support. George was born March 24, 1939, in Danbury, Conn., to Julia and George Dzendzel. He graduated from Danbury High School in 1956, and joined the U.S. Air Force for a four-year tour, taking him to San Antonio, Texas, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Okinawa. In 1956, while in Fort Worth, Texas for an eight-hour layover, walking down Seventh Street, he had a premonition he would come back to Fort Worth. In 1958 when he returned home, he put in for Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and got Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth. He had lived in the Metroplex ever since. George was a member of Gateway Church in Southlake and loved the teachings of the church, singing, friendships and working in the Welcome Center, greeting fellow members and guests. He enjoyed working for SCM, owning his own business with a couple of friends, and retired from Konica Minolta Business as a service technician in 2007. He enjoyed carpentry, square dancing, working on cars (before all the electronics), entertaining everyone with parties, dancing, cruising, water sports, playing tricks on others, card games, laughing, telling jokes and following the Cowboys and Rangers. George and Janet Crawford met in 1972, married in December 1974 and had been together for 40 years. He had two boys, George Robert and Toby Lee, from a previous marriage and one son, Stephen James, together with Janet. Survivors: Wife, Janet Crawford Dzendzel; sons, Robert Hawley and wife, Cathy, of Savannah, Ga., Toby Lee Hawley of Plano, Texas and Stephen James Dzendzel of Hurst; grandchildren, Gillian Hawley, Stephanie Hawley and George William Hawley of Savannah; sister, Maryann Crowley and husband, Richard, of San Antonio, Texas; several nieces and nephews; many other family; and more close friends.
