Ausbury, Robert E.
Robert "Bob" Ernest Theodore Ausbury, 84, of Danbury, died peacefully on November 3, 2012. He was born in White Plains, NY on July 24, 1928 to the late Robert Ausbury and Emily Scheiblich Ausbury. He attended the choir school at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City where he sang in a boys' choir and developed a lifelong love of classical music. After spending his high school years on a farm in Garrison, NY, he hitchhiked across the country where he worked as a forest firefighter, rancher and logger before taking up cooking as a profession in New York City. His culinaryexperience stretched from the East India Restaurant, managed by his sister, Gloria, to famous restaurants such as Sardi's, the Laurent, and the Barbizon Plaza. Here he was also an active union organizer for kitchen workers. In the early 1970s, he spent several years as a food service teacher for court-assigned boys at Lincoln Hall in Westchester County before opening his own restaurant, Woodstoves, in Sherman, CT. There he hosted many local classical and jazz musicians who performed for the diners. From his many musical associations, he hosted a weekly Bach and breakfast group self-dubbed "
The Boys in the Bach."
Robert is survived by his three children, Daniel, Lisa and Steven; his former wife, Anna Ridolfi;five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his two sisters, Emily and Gloria and leaves behind several loving nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, Bob would have appreciated that any monetary donations be sent to: the American Civil Liberties Union.
