Jerome Mazurkewicz passed away Friday morning Feb 22 , 2013 Jerome was 88 years old, would have been 89 on April 25th. He was born in Lawrence, Ma of polish parents. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Danbury as well as Danbury High School . Jerome and his soon to be brother in law Louis Dubret both enlisted in the Army together. Jerome was promoted to rank of sergeant and was a member of the 12 infantry. Jerome was captured during the "battle of the bulge" in Germany and was held prisoner for 8 months. Upon his release he returned stateside by sea. The ship he came home on was hit by another ship in the convoy, and sustained a large hole, however Jerome and the captain stayed on the ship and brought it into the port of New York where it was pictured in the New York Times. Jerome worked for JUDDS Florist shop , Marcus Dairy , New England Furniture and then ventured out on his own as a carpenter / builder. He built homes in Danbury, Bethel , Newtown, Brookfield, New Milford and Elkton, MD. He retired in 1996 after suffering a major heart attack and having a quadruple bypass. Jerome's wife June and son are grateful that they were always able to take care of him at home, and he ate dinner with us his last evening Thursday Feb 21. Jerome always enjoyed socializing and was a member of Newtown's Rocking Roosters square dance club, and started a new club when the family moved to Brookfield - Calico Squares. Club parties and summer cookouts hosted by Jerome and family were always well attended and enjoyed events. Later in life he continued to enjoy the social end of things with cookouts and Thanksgivings shared with family friends and of course the Diesel Get Togethers hosted by his son. (although Dads love of potato chips would catch him grabbing a bag, and sitting and munching it down, since the chips were not hidden at those times.) June and his son Terry put together a surprise 80th birthday party for him (although held in July instead of April) which turned into a family reunion. Over 60 people attended ! June made a block quilt which everyone was given a block to sign. Jerome is survived by his wife June of 67 years this upcoming March 2 , his son Terry both of Cornwall Bridge, CT , his daughter April in Elkton , Md and granddaughters and great grandchildren in MD. and PA. A memorial service with military honors will be held this spring in Cornwall Bridge, CT. Donations in his memory should be made to the Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance Service.
