Gladys Gunzer Obituary

Gunzer, Gladys
On June 13, 2016 at 10:18 a.m. Gladys Gunzer, formerly of New Fairfield, CT, lost her long-fought battle to cancer. Gladys was a role model to many throughout her life and especially in this fight. She showed true strength, determination and bravery. She was a native North Carolinian from Concord, NC and very proud of that fact. She studied Fine Arts at The Women's College of the University of North Carolina where she met her lifelong companion Dick Gunzer. Everyone that knew Gladys loved her. Her southern charm, warmth and laughter lit up a room. She was an exceptional mother, devoted and loving wife and true friend. Just the best person we knew.
Gladys was an accomplished Sculptor who worked for many years at Medallic Art Co. in Danbury. Afterwards, she became a Freelance Bas Relief Sculptor up until a little over a year ago. Notably, she was the first woman Sculptor to ever have their design chosen for the presidential inaugural medal. She was also a very talented Painter and won several awards in her earlier years. She was a doer who loved to knit, sew, cook, garden and go trekking far and near with her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Dick; her five children: Scott, Jodie, Suzie, Tracey and Randy and their spouses; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter that she adored. Her battle with cancer, in particular this past year, allowed her family to have some special bedside conversations that we will all treasure forever. She was at home where she wanted to be and surrounded by her family when she passed away. She is now reunited with her beloved sister and parents and we know she is watching over each of us until that day when we will see her again.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at the Congregational Church of New Fairfield, CT, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Mt. View Cemetery in New Fairfield, CT.
Calling Hours will be held on Friday, July 1, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, CT.
Contributions in her memory may be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 3 Landmark Square, Suite 330, Stamford, CT 06901.

I spent four years at Medallic Art Company, two of which were in the sculpting department. Gladys was so kind and helpful in my effort to learn sculpting. If not for her, I may not have ever had the opportunity to learn the proper techniques for bas-relief sculpting.
