James Dixon Obituary

ELK GARDEN, W Va.-James "Duck" Dixon, originally of Elk Garden passed away on Friday, July 18, 2014.
Duck was born on August 26, 1943. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Edna Dixon and stepmother Adrian (Clise) Dixon of Elk Garden. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Albert Dixon, Paul Dixon and Fred Dixon, along with one sister Dixie Hamilton, all of Elk Garden.
Duck is survived by his loving wife and caregiver of 37 years, Gay (Pittman) Dixon; daughters, Julie Ryan and husband Steve, Eckhart, Chandra Dixon-McDonough and husband Patrick, Short Gap; sons Rick Dixon and wife Robin, Kearneysville, Brian Kirk and wife Tammy, Springfield and Tyler Dixon, Short Gap. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Zach Ryan and wife Tiffany, Justin and Taylor Kirk, Natasha and Tyrus Dixon and Tucker and Macklen McDonough; Great grandchildren; Fiona, Gavin and Hunter; sisters: Cindy Dixon and partner David Michaels, Frostburg and Amy Mongold and partner Les Mull, Keyser: and one brother; Jeff Dixon and wife Michele of Yorktown, Va.
Duck served in the Army during the Berlin Crisis from 1961-1964. He was an independent truck driver for 43 years, and after losing his eyesight, he worked at Blind Industries of Cumberland. He was a member of the NRA, Goodfellowship Club, and the Sulfur Springs Methodist Church in Elk Garden.
Duck was an avid race fan and raced street stock cars at Jennerstown Speedway and the Cumberland Speedway. He loved deep-sea fishing with "Miami George" and spending a month every winter with the Kirklands. He enjoyed books on tape and loved music. Duck was loving and supportive to his family and always dependable and trustworthy to his friends. He had a passion for politics and was never without a Swisher Sweets cigar.
The following people held a special place in Duck's heart: Judy and Leonard Kirkland and family, Gary Cranford, Butch Brotemarkle, Stoney Stonebreaker, Roy Jones, Eleanor Grubb, Rick and Linda Perry, Dixie Brinkman, Pat Mason, Bert Mason, Kim Ritchie, Jane Sterne and countless extended family members. The family would also like to give special thanks to the VA Homebase Primary Care Unit and caregiver Carla Welsh.
Friends were received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue (www.scarpellifh.com) on Monday, July 21, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Brent Biller officiating.
Interment followed at the Maryland State Veteran's Cemetery, Rocky Gap.
Serving as pallbearers are: Brian Kirk, Tyler Dixon, Jeff Dixon, David Dixon, Patrick McDonough and Zach Ryan.
