William Donald Benton, Sr.
KEYSER, WV – William Donald "Don" Benton, 82, of Keyser passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2014.
Born on January 2, 1931 in Baltimore, he was a son of the late, Ronald and Dee-Dee (Green) Benton. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Lenore Benton, his daughter, Deborah Benton; his brothers, Ronald Earl, Byron Alexander and Raymond Benton and his sisters, Patricia Lee and Phyllis Benton.
Mr. Benton was a 20-year retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, a former salesman for Curtis Industries and owner/operator of AA Locks. He was a member of the Church of the Assumption, where he was a CCD Teacher, Lector and an extra-ordinary minister of the Eucharist; 4th Degree, Knights of Columbus, Father Patrick J. Gillooly Assembly 3214, Berkeley Springs, WV and Knights of Columbus Council 10545, Keyser.
Surviving are his son, William D. Benton, Jr. of New Creek; his four grandchildren, Jesse Benton and wife Jennifer of West Friendship, Robert W. Benton and his partner Morgan Apple, Bradford W. Benton, Jr. of Cumberland and Brady Benton of Accident, MD; his five great-grandchildren, Andrew, Alex, Brynn, Natalie and Evan and his brother William G. Benton of Queenstown, MD. He is also survived by special friends and care givers, Barbara and John Goehringer of Accident, MD and a huge extension of nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Friends were received at the Markwood Funeral Home, 111 S. Mineral St., Keyser on Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Christian Wake service was held at the funeral home, on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. The Knights of Columbus Rosary Service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 6, 2014 at the Church of the Assumption, 34 James Street, Keyser, at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. William K. Matheny, Jr. as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery, Keyser where military honors will be accorded.
