Caryl L. "Moose" Becker Obituary
KEYSER - Caryl L. "Moose" Becker, 72, of  Beacon Street, Keyser, WV, died Monday, July 14, 2014 at her daughter's residence in Bridgeport, WV, while under the care of Amedisys Hospice.
Born on June 15, 1942,  in Gary, Indiana, she was a daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary (Patrick) Sofiak.  She also was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene H. "Gene" Becker on April 24, 1988; a brother-in-law, Richard Mies and a nephew, Jeffrey Mies.
Mrs. Becker was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Indiana and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Western Michigan University. Caryl then went on to pursue her Masters Degree, but the death of her husband in 1988 prevented her from completing her studies, so she further specialized in behavior learning disabilites in the fields of what she would have had obtained had she completed her credits.
On June 1st of this year, Mrs. Becker retired with over 26 years of service as a kindergarten teacher for the Mineral County Board of Education. She was a member of the West Virginia Teachers Association, the National Education Association and several other related professional associations. She also was a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 191, Keyser and the Church of the Assumption, Keyser.  She enjoyed traveling, reading, crocheting, playing computer games and was an avid bowler.  She loved her special companions, her Yorkie "Mali" and her Golden Retriever, "Puffers".
Surviving are her daughters, Alison Culhane and husband Ryan of Bridgeport, WV and Ashley Becker of Mineola, NY; one brother, Dennis Sofiak and wife Sharon of Campbellsville, KY; one sister, Sharon Mies of Pinellas Park, FL; a nephew, Joel Mies and wife Lucy of Tampa, FL; a niece, Tracey Bean and husband Jason of Indianopolis, IN; 2 grand nephews, Nolan Mies and Joshua Bean and her granddogs, "Kiko" and "Nilla".
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Saturday, July 19, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. and on Sunday, July 20, 2014 from 1-4 p.m. There will be no visitation hours on Sunday evening.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 21, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption with Father William K. Matheny, Jr. as celebrant.
Interment will be in the Bayard Cemetery, Bayard, WV.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to the Amedisys Hospice, 67 Casino Drive, Suite 102, Anmoore, WV 26323; the Mineral County Humane Society, HC 84 Box 12, Keyser, WV 26726  or the Mineral County Library, c/o Connie Sutton, 105 N.
