Clarence William "Bill" Friend
KEYSER - Clarence William "Bill" Friend passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Potomac Valley Hospital.
Born October 17, 1937 in Keyser, he was a son of the late Clarence Walter and Margaret Ellen (Kady) Friend. Also preceding him in death were an infant brother, Joseph Edward Friend, and a sister, Margaret Elizabeth "Betty" (Friend) Kephart. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Bill was a member of the Keyser High School Class of 1955 and a U.S. Navy veteran, served aboard the battleship, USS New Jersey and received recognition while serving aboard the USS Stribling during the 1958 uprising in Lebanon and continued his military service in the Naval Reserves where he attained the rank of sergeant in the U.S. National Guard. He retired from Westvaco Corporation Power House April, 2000, after 40 years of services. He was catholic by faith and an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3518, Nancy Hanks, Keyser, where he was active with the Cooties and a recent member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6775, Queen's Point, McCoole. Through the years he had been a member of the Black Hawk Tribe #131, Improved Order of Redmen, Westernport, American Legion Kelly Mansfield Post 52, Piedmont and the Battleship New Jersey Association. For the past several years he had served on the Water Board for the City of Keyser.
Surviving are his wife Rita Mae (Shipe) Friend of Keyser and his daughter, Melinda Kay Friend of Ellicott City, Maryland. He is also survived by one niece and several nephews.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Friday, July 4, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. with Fr. William K. Matheny, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Philos Cemetery, Westernport, MD, where military honors will be accorded.
