Elwood E. "Woody" Symons Obituary
Elwood E. "Woody" Symons, 85, of Middle St, Barton, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, WV.
Born November 19, 1928 in Barton, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Delma Mae (Barnes) Symons. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Strong, two brothers, William Mongold and Tom Symons, and a sister, "Cookie" Broadwater.
"Woody" was a 1946 graduate of Barton High School. He was a United States Marine Corp Veteran. He retired from Westvaco Corp, having worked at the lower mill machine coating. During his younger years he lived with a baseball and mitt in his hands at all times. He played for the Bi-State Baseball League for various teams, including the Westvaco, Barton, McCoole, Keyser, and Grantsville teams. He was also an avid bowler. He bowled both duckpin and tenpin in many leagues throughout the area. He enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, especially mushroom and walnut hunting as well as wild game hunting. In later years he liked woodworking and tending to his yard. He was a member of the Barton United Methodist Church, a member of Barton Post #189 American Legion, and a member of National Rifle Association.
He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth "Libby" (LaRue) Symons of Moran Manor Nursing Center, two daugthters, Deborah Strong and husband Richard of Westernport, Victoria "Vicky" Burt of Keyser, WV, and husband Robert Burt of Midland, his sisters and brothers, June Clark of Barton, Norma Jean Metz of Barton, Charlie Symons and wife Rebekkah of Frostburg, Jim Symons and wife Dana of Westernport, Nancy Crowe and husband Ivan of Barton, Diana Grady and husband Rob of Mill Run, Kay Clark of Mill Run, Joe Mongold and wife Janet of Ohio, Jack Mongold and wife Zinnia of Moscow, Dave Mongold of Cumberland, Dick Mongold of Ridgeley, WV. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Mischelle Malone and husband Todd, Teresa Cook and husband Kenneth, Nathan Symons, who "Woody" helped to raise, and wife Jenna, and great grandchildren, Cody Malone, Hallie Cook, Tyler Cook, "Woody's" special buddy, his dog "Trouble", and his nieces and nephew that he was closest to, Linda Miller, Krista McKenzie, Nancy Radcliffe and Ernie Metz.
Friends and family will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 PM. The Barton American Legion will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Friday at 6:00 PM. A funeral service will be conducted at Barton United Methodist Church on Saturday at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Sandy Cowan and Rev. Gary Morris officiating.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
