Virgil U. "Pete" Hull Obituary

Virgil U. "Pete" Hull
KEYSER, WV – Virgil U. "Pete" Hull, 97, of Keyser, died on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at his home.
Virgil, son of the late Jesse U. Hull and Zenna (Duling) Hull, was born June 12, 1917 in Keyser, West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia, and brothers Warren and Robert.
He graduated from Keyser High School in 1934. Soon after graduation, he was employed by the Celanese Corporation of America where he worked until 1944 when he was called to active military duty during World War II. Pete spent 18 weeks at Camp Wheeler, Georgia in infantry training and from there was sent overseas where he served with the 100th Infantry Division as a combat infantryman (mortar and heavy machine gunner) in Europe during two campaigns. He received, among other awards, the Distinguished Unit Badge and the Good Conduct Medal. He was also awarded the Purple Heart Medal as a result of a wound inflicted by shrapnel from a German artillery shell.
Following military service, he attended Potomac State College and West Virginia University and was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Science Degree in Secondary Education. He taught at Fort Ashby High School for five years and then moved to Keyser High School where he served as Guidance Counselor until he retired in 1980. He was very proud to be an educator and never lost his passion for teaching even after he retired.
Pete was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Queens Point VFW Post #6775, McCoole, MD, the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #662 in Keyser and the Alumni Associations of both Potomac State College and West Virginia University.
Pete is survived by Josephine Berrett Hull, his loving wife of 73 years, and sons Joseph (wife Merran) of Rochester, New York, Stephen (wife Carol) of Salt Lake City, Utah, granddaughter Meredith Hull of Arlington, Virginia, and grandson Robert Hull of Salt Lake City, Utah.
The family wishes to thank their special friends and neighbors for the tremendous support and love provided by them over the years and especially the last several months. The family would also like to thank the caregivers who helped Pete through the last month of his life, the doctors, nurses and other staff at Potomac Valley and the Hospice of Potomac Valley Hospital, about whom they cannot say enough.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Potomac Valley Hospice, 100 Pin Oak Lane, Keyser, W.Va., 26726.
Friends will be received at Markwood Funeral Home on Thursday, July 31, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday, August 1, 2014 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Vickie K. Minnich officiating. Interment will follow in Mill Meadow Cemetery, Keyser.
