Lorraine J. Avers Obituary
Lorraine J. Avers, 87, of Keyser, WV, died Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home.
Born on August 3, 1926 at Brooklyn, New York, she was a daughter of the late Michael Joseph and Lucille (Gaffney) O'Rourke. She also was preceded in death by her husband Wallace Lee Avers on November 21, 1979 and by a sister, Lucille Masperio.
Mrs. Avers retired in 1995 as a Title I parent-teacher coordinator with the Allegany County Board of Education. She was a member of the Church of the Assumption, Keyser and the Catholic Daughters, was a life member of the Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers, Inc., and was a member and past president of the Westernport Elementary School. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Queen's Point Memorial Post # 6775, VFW, McCoole, MD and was a former member of the Keyser Kiwanis Club. Lorraine loved music and enjoyed her time spent with the Ladies Harmony Singers, the "Sweet Adelines."
Surviving are her children, Lorraine McMaster of Redding, CA, Robert Avers, Patrick Avers and Michael "Rooster" Avers, all of Keyser, Linda Dawson of Clover, SC, Lucille Moran of McCoole, Lisa Reed and Lara Junkins, both of Martinsburg, WV and Loretta King of Rock Hill, SC; one brother, Robert Joseph O'Rourke of Liverpool, NY; 28 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Monday, December 16, 2013 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday evening at 8:00 p.m.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Assumption on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with Father William K. Matheny, Jr. as celebrant.
Interment will be in the St. Thomas Cemetery, Keyser.
