William Summers McDowell Sr. Obituary
William Summers McDowell, Sr., 86, of McCoole, MD, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 17, 2014.

Born on April 2, 1928 at Beryl, WV, he was a son of the late William Henry and Mernie (Cosner) McDowell. He also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Shelley McDowell in 1986 and two sisters, Dorothy Lancaster and Mernie Braden.

At the age of 17, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during World War II. After returning from the service, he worked as a truck driver for W & W Coal Company. He then attended Catherman's Business School in Cumberland and became the bookkeeper for W & W. At the time of his retirement, he was employed with D & L Coal Company. Bill also served proudly for many years as treasurer of the Allegany County Council of PTA and was a former member of the Dawson United Methodist Church where he served in various capacities.

Bill was a loved and respected member of his community. He was always quick to make a friend and was always ready with a joke. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Maxine (Iser) McDowell; his children, Melissa Davis of McCoole, Bill McDowell, Jr. and wife Betty of Cresaptown, MD, Terry McDowell and wife Diane of Westernport, MD and Alison Smith and husband Kenny of Keyser; nine grandchildren, Adria Davis of Rawlings, MD, Shelby Doman and husband David of Frostburg, MD, Sarah Escobar and husband Carlos of Westernport, Erin Stonebraker and husband Pat of Springfield, WV, Bryan McDowell and wife Kara of Keyser, Tyler Smith and wife Sarah of Keyser, David McDowell of Salisbury, NC, Natalie Cardella and husband Chad of White Pine, TN and Katie McDowell of Cresaptown,  MD; twelve great-grandchildren, Kain, Madison, Andrew, Gabbie, Evan, Hailey, Ethan, Erica, Carlynn, Anthony, Adrianna and Ehren; a brother, Hilbert McDowell of Dundalk, MD and two sisters, Catherine Wilt of Ohio and Mildred Lorraine Cottrill of Cumberland, MD. He will also be fondly remembered by numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. John Walker officiating.

Interment will be in the Dawson Cemetery, Dawson, MD.
