Rachel Kathleen (Gordon) Coffey, 86, of Waynesboro, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at her residence.

She was born on January 22, 1924, in Churchville, the daughter of the late Edward Lee and Sally Virginia (Michael) Gordon.

Mrs. Coffey was a member of Mount Vernon Church of the Brethren. In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking for her family, gardening and tending to her flowers. Rachel was the most loving, caring mother and Nanny. We will miss her more than words can say.

On May 20, 1943, she married Guy L. Coffey, who preceded her in death on September 22, 1994. They had been married for 51 years.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by son, Guy Lyle Coffey Jr.; brothers, Cecil A., William B., James E., Cletus C., Wade H., and Austin L. Gordon; sisters, Ruby A. Culpen, Nellie L. Freed and Lugene E. Warren.

Mrs. Coffey is survived by her daughter, Sandra Miller of Waynesboro; sons, Gary W. Coffey and his wife, Corrine, of Staunton and Darrell G. Coffey and his wife, Tammy, of Waynesboro; grandchildren, Lisa Hodge and her husband, Thomas, Brian Toft, Adam Coffey and Jessi Kidd and her husband, Jeremiah; great- grandson, Matthew Hodge; brother, Edward L. Gordon; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as special caregiver, Phyllis Mays.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, October 1, 2010, at Mount Vernon Church of the Brethren with Pastor Randy Simmons officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Adam Coffey, Brian Toft, Ted Warren, Eddie Lee, Michael, Doug and David Gordon and Jeremiah Kidd.

Honorary pallbearers will be friends and family attending the service.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, September 30, 2010, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 West Main Street and other times at Rachel's home.
