Zula Shirley Obituary
Zula Mae Harmon Shirley, 96, of Mount Torrey Road, Lyndhurst, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2011, at 8:35 p.m., at the residence of her daughter and son in law, Doris and Lonnie Bailey.
She was born on Tuesday, July 14, 1914, in Folly Mills, the daughter of the late William and Aldie Harmon.
Zula was a member of Sherando United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Sidney C. Shirley; three sons, Melvin, Sidney Ray, and Jerry; two brothers, Elzie Z. Harmon on February 13, 2011, and Earl Harmon; a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.
Zula is survived by one sister, Pauline Fitzgerald of Waynesboro; 11 children, Donald Shirley of Stuarts Draft, Billy and Ann Shirley, Peggy Monroe, Doris and Lonnie Bailey, all of Lyndhurst, Mary Lou and Avery Jones of Lynchburg, Ronnie and Ann Shirley of Lyndhurst, Bonnie and Steve Campbell of Stuarts Draft, Steve and Rita Shirley of Hopewell, Eddie and Sandy Shirley of Lyndhurst, Paul and Tesscha Shirley of Lyndhurst, and Bruce Shirley of Stuarts Draft; 36 grandchildren, 66 great- grandchildren, 12 great- great-grandchildren and daughter-in-law, Kim Shirley.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2011, at Sherando United Methodist Church with Charles Ramsey and Pastors David Breeden and William Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Robert Monroe, Keith Bailey, Ronnie Shirley, Matthew Shirley, Sidney Jones, Jesse Jones, Chris Campbell, Joey Shirley, Chad Shirley and M.C. Shirley. Honorary pallbearers will be her other grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2011, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, as well as other times at the home of her daughter, Doris Bailey.
Memorial contributions may be made, in Zula's memory, to the Hospice of the Shenandoah, 64 Sports Medical Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939, Sherando United Methodist Church 1919 Howardsville Turnpike, Stuarts Draft, VA 24477, or the Wilson Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 157, Lyndhurst, VA 22952.
