 MILLINGTON, Md. - Joseph Young "Joe" Sanderson, Sr., a master mariner, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at his home. Born in Drexel Hill, Pa. on July 28, 1919, he was the son of the late David Simpson Sanderson and Anna (Gailey) Sanderson. Mr. Sanderson graduated from Upper Darby High School; and the Pennsylvania State Nautical School Ship "Annapolis", Class of 1941. Captain Sanderson was a Navy veteran of WW II and served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters as well as the Okinawa Battle. He was a United States Merchant Marine and served in various licensed capacities. Upon honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, he was employed by the Marine Department of the Sun Oil Company in 1947 and sailed as Chief Mate and ship master until 1962, when he came ashore as a port captain for Sun Oil. He later became manager of the Ship Repair Division and a Vice President of Sun Transport Inc., a subsidiary of the Sun Oil Company and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1979. Mr. Sanderson was a life member of the Washington Memorial Pipe Band of Wayne, Pa. and a member of the American Legion. He loved playing bagpipes with friends, listening to Scottish tunes and Bluegrass music. He cherished his heritage. He spent many hours researching and documenting the family genealogy. Mr. Sanderson was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and growing azaleas. In his retirement, he spent many seasons in Nantucket, Mass. He learned the arts of caning chairs and weaving handmade Nantucket Lightship Baskets. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Mr. Sanderson is survived by his wife, Helen (Newill) Sanderson; and five children, from his predeceased wife, Loretto Swank Sanderson, Joseph (Barbara) of Texas; Anne Kathleen Manogue (Larry) of Md., David, John (Rose), and Margaret Sanderson (Ray) of Pa.; three grandchildren, Jack (Beth), Morgan, and Caroline Sanderson of Pa. Mr. Sanderson was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret Christiansen and Jean Parkinson. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Gail, Nina, and Helping Hands for his care. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 Cypress St, Millington, MD 21651 on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 11 a.m. Friends are invited to visit one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private.  K. Sard, 76 SANDTOWN - Dorothy Marie K. Sard passed away on Monday, May 20, 2013 at Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover. She was born on Sept., 21, 1936 to the late William and Emma Thorpe Klecan. Mrs. Sard was a graduate of Greensboro High School. She had been employed with Playtex of Dover retiring after 40 years of service. She was a member of the Sandtown Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed visiting the beach, growing flowers and listening to gospel music. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James E. Sard; two brothers, Charles and George Klecan; sister, Elsie Greenley. She is survived by her son, Edward Sard (Mary Lee) of Felton; daughter, Carol Torres of Felton; step-Son, Donnie Sard of Salisbury; her nine siblings, Betty Smith (Eric) of Marydel, Md., Adelaide Klecan of Goldsboro, Md., Edith L. Greenly of Felton, John A. Klecan of Sudlersville, Md., Ruth A. Sane (Chris) of Rutherford, N.C., Joan Engelsiepen (Richard) of Camden, James Klecan (Tina) of Hartly, Louis Klecan (Carol) of Felton and Shirley A. McNamire (William) of Wyoming; four grandchildren, Emily Pridgen, Johnathon Sard, Kelley Anne Torres and Michael Sard; and two great-grandchildren, Harley Pridgen and Justin Pridgen. A Funeral service for Dorothy will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the Fleegle & Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro, MD. Burial will follow in the Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. MILFORD - Edna M. Sharp passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Milford Center. She was born in Wilmington, daughter of the late James and Ida Sapp. Edna was a retired bookkeeper. She enjoyed flower gardening and loved children. In addition to her parents, Edna is preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Sharp; and a son, Phillip E. Sharp, Sr. She is survived by four sons, W. Thomas Sharp, Jr., Ronald H. Sharp, Donald W. Sharp and William W. Sharp; and several grandchildren; and great grandchildren.
