Ellendale - Elmer S. Ennis died Friday, July 18, 2014, at home. He is the son of the late John B. and Ida Messick Ennis. Mr. Ennis graduated from Georgetown High School, the class of 1943. He worked at DuPont's as a maintenance mechanic for 36 years, and after retirement, drove a school bus for Cape Henlopen School District transporting students on daily routes to athletic events and school trips. He was proud to have served in the Army
Air Corp as a Sergeant and was very involved in his community. Mr. Ennis was a lifetime member of Ellendale United Methodist Church, and a lifetime member of Ellendale Fire Company, in which he holds the record for the most years of service, 68 years. Mr. Ennis was also a lifetime charter member of the Ellendale-Georgetown V.F.W
. Post 2931. He was awarded Volunteer Fireman
of the year in 1985 and Delaware Volunteer Fireman's Association Fireman of the year in 1996, and was the recipient of those awards numerous times. He held the office of Chief Emeritus at Ellendale Fire Company, was a member of Sussex Co. Volunteer Association, the State's Chief Assoc., and Past President Sussex County Chief Association. In addition, Mr. Ennis was a former member of Ellendale Town council for 20 years, a former member of Ellendale School Board, and he was a member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Ennis was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Webb Ennis, and daughter, Jane Marie Ennis; ten siblings: Curtis W., John B. Jr., Charles, Rodney, Roland, Estelle, Emma, Myrtle, Annie, and Edith. He is survived by a brother, Howard Ennis, and his children: Judy Hallman and husband Jimmy, Jerry Ennis, Jeff Ennis and wife Anne, and Julie Greenly and husband Steve; five grandchildren: Janine Willey & husband Steve, Clint Hallman and wife Jennifer, Elizabeth Dukes and husband Austin, Brittany Ennis, and Stephanie Greenly; five great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; his brother in-law and sister in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and his V.F.W. and fire company families. A funeral service with fireman's honors will be held Friday, July 25, 2014, at noon in the Ellendale United Methodist Church, 610 Main St., Ellendale, DE. Friends may call on Thursday evening at the Ellendale Fire Company, Main Street, Ellendale, DE from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Ellendale United Methodist Church, 610 Main St., Ellendale, DE 19941, Ellendale Fire Company, P.O. Box 5, Ellendale, DE 19941, or Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963. Interment will be in Ellendale Cemetery, Ellendale, DE.
