James Wallace Tomey

DOVER - James Wallace Tomey, 75, died Friday, July 19, 2013 at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla. He lived and worked in the Dover area for most of his adult life. He served in the Air Force from 1959-62 and was news and editor for The Dover AFB Airlifter in 1961, co-hosted a 1962 local radio talk show and worked for H.L. Tracy Associates. His career spanned many phases of the news and print businesses, including publishing, advertising, circulation, sales, production, printing, HR, public relations, photography and columnist for newspapers in Delaware, Florida and Virginia. He was employed by Independent Newspapers Inc. for 22 years, including The Delaware State News, Sussex County Post, Harrington Journal, DAFB Falcon and publisher of INI's Sunshine Newspaper's affiliates The Okeechobee News and The Arcadian in Florida. He also worked for, Modern Press Printing, was publisher of Family Times and Delaware Builder magazines in Delaware, and the Northern Neck News in Warsaw, Va., was print ad manager at Price Honda and received Toyota and Chrysler awards in customer relations management for C. F. Schwartz. He was an award-winning Toastmasters speaker. He retired to The Villages, Florida in 2010 and continued his interest art projects and writing as a member of The Villages Creative Writing Club. Friends and associates will be remember him for his sense of humor, kindness, Christian spirit, creativity, keen interest in cars and automobile design, enthusiasm for writing, singing and all things having to do with the newspaper business. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Janet Erdle Tomey; daughter and son-in-law, Christen Leigh and Gene Kelly; grandsons, Alexander John and David James Kelly of Abingdon, Md.; and brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Kathy Tomey of Lititz, Pa. Services were held in Florida.
