Alonza Hubbard Obituary

Alonza C. 'Cope' Hubbard, 83 ROCK HALL, Md. - Alonza C. "Cope" Hubbard, of Rock Hall, Md., died on Tuesday May 11, 2010, at Chester River Manor in Chestertown, Md. He was 83. Born in Rock Hall, Md., on Feb. 13, 1927, he was the son of the late, Alonza Morgan and Carrie Akers Hubbard. In 1952 the Hubbard family purchased a Rock Hall waterfront property which later became Hubbard's Pier and Seafood Inc, a wholesale and retail seafood business. It 1953 they expanded and opened and operated a restaurant which opened at 4 a.m. to cater to the local waterman, fishing parties and tourists. Mr. Hubbard and his father managed and operated the fishing business while his brother Wilkes managed the on shore business. After his father passed away in 1958, he continued as a dedicated waterman. In 1962 the partnership was dissolved and Cope continued as a waterman and took up farming as well. He then bought Bud Hubbard's Restaurant and Seafood in Chestertown, Md., in 1969 and continued to operate the restaurant and business until 1977. He loved working on the water and continued to do so until his health condition forced him to retire in 2008. Cope enjoyed hunting, loved life, his friends and family and loved Rock Hall. He was a member of the Maryland Waterman's Association and the Kent County Waterman's Association and enjoyed attending the Waterman's Convention in Ocean City. He was also proud to be chosen as the Grand Marshall of Rock Hall's 4th of July Parade. In addition to his wife, Eleanor C. Hubbard, he is survived by a daughter, Donna Edwards and her husband, Charles of Rock Hall, Md.; sister, Oneida Francis of Rock Hall, Md.; granddaughter, Sherry Hubbard Woodfield and her husband, Chuck of Rock Hall, Md.; two step grandchildren, Lori Bunts of Galena, Md. and Amy Dwyer of Rock Hall, Md.; two great- grandchildren, Ellie and Abby; three step-great- grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Charlie and Kyle. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sherry Lee Hubbard in 1971; two brothers, G. Wilkins Hubbard and Grover "Bud" Hubbard; and a sister, Ivy Mae Hubbard. Services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Rd.
