GREENWOOD - Allen Ward Arthur passed into eternal peace on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 after a brief hospital stay. He was born in Huddleston, Va., on Aug. 18, 1924 and attended Huddleston School until his enlistment with the Army Air Corp. He proudly served in the United States Air Force until his retirement after 26 years in 1971 as a Master Sergeant. He was a World War II, Korean, and Vietnam Veteran. He joined the Farmington Vol. Fire Department and held the position of President for ten consecutive years. Allen was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. His service included Degrees of Legion, Fellow, and Pilgrim in 2010. He was an active member with the Harrington Moose Lodge and served many positions including Governor. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and was a Master Mason. Allen's passing was preceded in death by his first wife, Erma Faye Walls Arthur in 1999; his parents, Walter and Winnifre Arthur; brothers, Everette Arthur, Claude Arthur and Welford Arthur; and his sisters, Inez Krantz, Mary Arthur, Dorothy Hancock, Sarah Arthur, and Carol Arthur. Allen enjoyed life everyday and showed his family and friends the love he had for living. He was an avid golfer and made a bogey on his last day of playing golf a week before his passing. He enjoyed gardening and feeding the birds in their yard. He continued traveling throughout his retirement, his last trip was to Florida in April. He will be best remembered as "Pop" to most that knew him. He is survived by his wife Frances Harvey of Greenwood, Del.; his sons, James Allen Arthur (Donna) of Huddleston, Va., Joseph Martin Arthur (Suzanne) of Valparaiso, Fla.; his daughter, Janice Faye Flowers (Timothy) of Huddleston, Va. Allen received many grandchildren beginning in 1971 with Kristina Lynn Arthur, Michael Allen Pettit (Tara), Cassandra Lynn Nelson (Jim), James Walter Pettit, Jennifer Lea Soles (Jimmy), Joseph Martin Arthur II (Aliya), Jacob Adam Arthur; great-grandchildren began for Allen in 1991 with Michael Anthony Bianconi, Justin Stuart Romaca, Trevor Allen Porterfield, Brandon Scott Romaca, Jordan Allen Soles, Jasmin Elise Soles, Olivia Marie Nelson, Elliott Michael Pettit, and Adrian Allen Pettit Through family marriages Allen received a daughter, Brenda Moran (Tom); and son, Cleland Harvey; grandchildren, Jennifer Ray, Lisa Arnold (Wade), David Harvey (Jennifer), Sasha Bennett (Chad), Jessica Wiggins, Crystal Flowers, Taylor Moran, Alison Moran, Patricia Moran, William Harvey; and great-grandchildren, Kyle Wiggins, Autumn Wiggins, Anders Toftoy, Chloe Arnold, Ella Harvey, and Socia Bennett. Surviving are his sisters in Bedford County Va., Mildred Gardner, Arline Ferguson, and Gaynelle Morris (William); and sister-in-law, Odelle Witt Arthur; and many nephews and nieces who were dear to his heart. Family and friends are invited to his Memorial services which will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Harrington Moose Lodge, Route 13, Harrington, Delaware. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions in his memory to Harrington Moose Lodge 534, PO Box 339, Harrington, DE 19952.
